BubblemanHey, what's going on? How is this for a little bit of a late church? Let me send out the invitations here real quick. Make sure that we get all of our people sent through there. And wow, hash church 58. And I'm here in Toronto. I apologize for the lateness of the church. But yeah, things are a little bit late. It's nice to see everyone in this chat.
BubblemanHey, guys. Yeah, so I don't know what we've got, a couple hundred people in the room or something along those lines, but yeah, hopefully the crew, Mr. Mark Scaldone is in the house. Welcome, Mark.
BubblemanAnd Mr. Etienne, can I hear you guys? Or are you not talking yet? No, Etienne's muted. I'm not talking yet. Oh, that's good. Now I can hear you. I was a little bit scared, I'm not going to lie. What's up, baby? How's everybody doing? Good.
BubblemanExcellent. Well, hopefully we get an internet and it allows us to do a little bit of a church today. I know that it's usually slow here at the Sheraton, but I have gotten off my flight. I just flew for four and a half hours straight and have landed here in Toronto. Missed my good friend, Black, by just one day. She was just here, so that was kind of an unfortunate miss.
BubblemanI'm not talking yet.
MarkOh, that's good. Now I can hear you. I was a little bit scared. I'm not going to lie.
Bubbleman420k, you've got to turn that YouTube chat off, and then I think the YouTube live chat is coming through your speakers. But welcome. Looks like you've got a whole crew there. Yeah, dude. Here, let me unmute you once you've muted that. Let's see. Boom. How you doing, buddy? Boom, rip, man.
SpeakerBoom, man. Hey, how about this?
BubblemanHow about this one for a good one? I get my family today. I get in the truck. I drive to the airport. It's like 5 in the morning. I get everyone into the airport. I'm standing there getting checked in, and I'm kind of looking at my stuff, and I'm like, God, I think I'm missing something, and it turns out I was missing something. I had forgotten my mothership and all my smoking paraphernalia Like, you know, the down stems and the carb caps and the quarts and the halos and the...
BubblemanSo I literally, while I was checking in at the airport, I said, I need to go back to my car right now. Can you just check my family in real slow? And the guy was like, totally, man. And he literally checked my family and it took 14 minutes, which is the same time it took me to run, get in a cab, drive to long-term parking, get in my truck, get the case out, get back in the cab, drive back to the airport and get there just in time for him to be like giving me my...
BubblemanMy passports and... Hey, welcome, Todd.
ToddHow you doing, bud? Good afternoon.
BubblemanEveryone looks so awake.
ToddYeah, what's up with starting it at a normal hour, huh? How incredible is that?
SpeakerYeah, instead of Sunday morning. Well, I'll tell you, still, here we are...
ToddThis is why I avoided church as a child, you know. Oh, that's hilarious.
BubblemanWell, we got 339 people who have figured out that we are online online.
BubblemanI guess I'm a little bit late, about 28 minutes late for the 2 o'clock. I'm going to try and get going, but hey, better late than never. How is everybody doing? Bong rip!
MarkYes, no shortage of bong rips.
BubblemanGot a bunch of people in the chat room chatting away.
SpeakerI made some rosin last night. Oh yeah? About 52 grams worth of it, actually.
BubblemanNice, nice. Pressing out the rosin. So you're using my press, so what is my percentage of that?
SpeakerYou know I like what your percentage is, bro.
BubblemanBottom line is I know I'm smoking so much of it with you anyway. It's like I'm so happy that I figured out to lend you that press before I left because I just knew how happy it would make you.
SpeakerDude, I'm like a kid with a brand new toy on Christmas, like a little kid with a brand new hockey set or a video game or whatever. Like, seriously, like, yes, I did a video. I put it out on YouTube. Nice. Ben, we did some rosining last night. Just a quick little four-bagger. Those bags are great.
BubblemanJust a quick little four-bagger.
BubblemanWhat YouTube channel? So people that want to look at that video can go check it out. It's D420K?
SpeakerD420K on YouTube, D420K on Instagram, D420K on Facebook.
BubblemanHey, we don't need all the fucking spamming, man. Just the YouTube.
SpeakerHey, I've got a tattooed on my butt cheek, too. All the other social media parts. Oh, nice. I'll leave that alone.
BubblemanI'm sorry. It's so neat to see all of you guys awake. Oh, fuck. Wonderful. Well, I hope everyone's been having a good week since our last week. Of course... I have buggered off out of Vancouver and to Jamaica. I should be there in the next couple of days, but for now, a little bit of time in Toronto. So that's always, well, I wouldn't say it's always fun, but it's not so bad in the big city.
ToddWell, it's also daylight savings time, so, you know, you guys do that, right?
BubblemanWe do do that. In fact, I saw recently that some people in British Columbia are like, fuck that, we don't want to do this anymore. So they're like petitioning the government that they don't want to do daylight savings anymore. And I'm just like, what? Why do you care?
BubblemanBut, hey, to each their own care, I want them to have the freedom to petition the government and get that law changed, if that's what they want.
ToddNo, no on Canada law, whatever it is.
BubblemanIt saved me an hour today, bro.
ToddI'm only, of course, joking, dude. Everyone's giving me mega shit for saying yes on three.
BubblemanYou have a lot more support than you have naysayers, though. It's a heavy situation, once again, where you have this. And I see the argument from both sides, but you have this sort of like, look, let's just make it better for all cannabis users and smokers. That's step one. Not worrying about who's going to monopolize the sales of it, because, you know, Skunkman Sam said a really wonderful Facebook a couple of days ago, and he said, listen, whether you think it or not, the prohibition model was a monopoly, and that monopoly was owned by those who were willing to break the law, And make that profit.
BubblemanAnd now that monopoly is over and people are kind of like, I just don't want a monopoly. I want everyone to be able to do their thing. But I heard you loud and clear. Get your foot in the door. Let's get a fucking initiative going in Ohio because there's never really been one. I mean you said you got busted in 1995 in Ohio. What was it? 10 or 20 pounds or something?
BubblemanYeah.
ToddNot 33. That's how I met Don. So it's really funny that I would, just two minutes ago, Don walked in and we were sitting there having a spirited conversation about the wonders of cannabis.
ToddIs this a misdemeanor?
SpeakerDid I just commit an act of a crime? Hold on. I forced it on him for anybody watching. I forced it on him.
BubblemanYou guys are hilarious. Nice to see you in church again, Don.
SpeakerThank you. Love you, Donnie. It's okay. You can smoke the pot.
ToddSoon you'll be able to smoke the pot in Ohio.
SpeakerYep. Do it now. It's not a crime.
ToddSo we've been disagreeing as much as we ever have in our friendship over this, but... Hey, disagreeing is okay.
BubblemanThere's healthiness. There's good... I'm sure between the two of you guys, you're both very sharp, you know, and you're both definitely not noobs in the industry, so guaranteed, in the least, you both have valid things to say, so I mean... How can you deny that?
ToddI think we see each other's point, too. You know, like, he, you know, look, you know, I've been annoyed, and I'll say it out here publicly with the people that have attacked you publicly or personally because I've known you for so long and all the things you've tried to do. I think he's worked really hard to make the world a better place, you know, and I just think that, you know, we all can see incremental progress, you know, but I get the idealist in you and how you think this is, You know, fucking not cool, and these companies are coming in and manipulating the system.
ToddBut I would say, don't show me where the system's not manipulated. You know, show me where, you know, the cops don't have a monopoly on my freedom when it's illegal. And, you know, and I'll say, sure. But until then, I think little steps. Any step, good step. Any step. Any step, sorry.
SpeakerAny step. That's the problem. That's the problem, and it defines our difficulty in thinking. We on the ground in Ohio have to look At the wisdom of this step that's being taken, and the activist community in Ohio is pretty dead set against this. We've all been working together a long time for this change. We have wanted freedom for this plant and freedom for our lives for a long time, and this was the mantle that we took on as a generation, three generations now, however you count it, to Thank you for joining us.
SpeakerSo we have the people.
MarkYou just don't have the law.
SpeakerWe have every major newspaper in Ohio has come out in favor of changing our cannabis laws but saying that this particular act of greed is not the way that we should regulate. You have to understand how things are on the ground in Ohio. We have had Five years of experience with the same people giving us a monopoly on casinos in Ohio. So we have... Get the fuck out of Ohio!
SpeakerWhat's that? That's what he said he's going to do! He said I'm not going to leave the state. Get the fuck out! I will if I have to. Go back when the laws change.
ToddNo, I want to give, you know, look, when I first met Don 20 fucking million years ago, he got his law degree because he wanted to stop strip mining. And, you know, and... I get that there is a lot of things capitalists have done, you know, now they're blowing off the tops of mountains, you know, because they don't feel like tunneling. And it's negative. I mean, and we really do have to stand up and have a voice against these things.
ToddI completely agree with you. But in some ways right now, we don't even have a right to do those things. So if this passes, then you can go like you were a strip mine activist and say, fuck you against marijuana monopolies. But right now, there can't even be marijuana groves.
SpeakerStrip mining isn't written into the Ohio Constitution. You know, when you write things into the Ohio Constitution, they're written in stone. I mean, the only example we have in our whole history of the country is alcohol prohibition. It took 19 years to reverse the constitutional prohibition on it here. This stuff shouldn't be written in the Constitution. If anything, I mean, they didn't need to write it into the Constitution.
SpeakerThe same process you can write laws as well as change the Constitution. And they could have made changes that weren't so permanent. But to say that these ten properties are the only properties that can grow pot in Ohio, well, we're not even going to tell you who owns them. You know, and they want us to vote for it? We're just not going to do it.
ToddIn Ohio, the people are already... Well, in my feeling, not to sound like a dork, but I did five years in the feds, and you know what? Feds can come in and say, you're a state shit, we're going to arrest you anyway. So if they set up these big warehouses and fill them up full of weed, there's no guarantee the DEA won't be at their doors knocking it down and arresting the guys.
ToddAnd like you said, it's all one company, so it won't be very fucking hard to get them all together. I mean, that'll be a typical drug bust in the day of DEA. And then what happens? Then everyone in the state of Ohio still has the right to grow weed because it's written in the Constitution? That sounds like a positive element. I mean, not to be rude, but like, I think the capitalist market's going to make itself out to what it is.
ToddAnd if guys like Bernie Sanders get in and the feds actually reposition this and you get descheduling, guess what? It's going to be an import economy. People in Ohio are going to want to buy shit that comes from Lynchburg, Tennessee, because that whiskey's great. And they're going to get their stuff from out of state. So truthfully, those monopolist guys might find themselves with their shit in their hand because there's no market for it because they legalized something that actually everyone could grow homegrown.
ToddWhat's going to happen when that happens? The economy, in part, changes.
SpeakerThat's looking at it with rose-colored glasses that Obama or Sanders are going to, Rose-colored glasses. Not just reschedule marijuana, but totally deschedule marijuana. Sorry, everybody. You can see we've been getting along like two peas in a pod.
BubblemanWhat's wrong with rose-colored glasses? Open record. Hey, let him finish, guys. Let him finish.
SpeakerIt's okay. My problem with issue three is it sets these marijuana laws in stone so the legislature can't change them. We're going to be stuck with this for a long time. You don't want to do that. For instance, one of the worst things about it is they're talking about medical, medical, medical, but the only way that you can get in the medical program is to have your primary care physician give you the proper recommendation.
SpeakerAnd we're not set up for that at all. There's no primary care physicians that have insurance coverage for this. The Medical Association, it'll take years to do. There'll be a few people in the medical program. It's not like California where the whole state's being run on a medical program. At least the people in California that are... No, so maybe it'll be more honest. Well, maybe it'll be more honest.
SpeakerPeople who are dishonest. They don't want to get to know because they just want to get high. At least they're under doctor supervision here. And if it were really hurting people, the doctors would be speaking up and saying there's a problem. Okay? That's a lot safer than not doing it. It's kept it quiet in California all this time, and people are accepting. Quiet? Quiet? I've been prosecuted four times.
SpeakerWhat are you talking about quiet?
ToddI spent five of the last 20 in a prison cell.
SpeakerYou visited me.
ToddWhat the fuck was quiet about any of that?
SpeakerI've backed you up in your decisions all this time, and here you are. Disagreeing with you about legalizing pot in Ohio, it blows my mind.
ToddWho used to visit me in my jail in Ohio, too, now that I contemplate this, right? You would have sued. No, it just trips me out, man. Look, Baby Steps. You're not born jet skiing, bro. Nah. Nah. Baby Steps.
BubblemanRichard Dreyfuss, of course, wrote the book Baby Steps in the movie What About Bob with Bill Murray. If any of you want to learn about Baby Steps, you can check that movie out. It's pretty funny.
BubblemanHey, how did you get muted, Todd?
ToddYou know what? Hold on. You know, this was all spontaneous. You know, I was up here working, and Don just happened over, and he didn't know we were starting this right now, and he'd been sitting down for as long as we'd been burning a joint. So this wasn't planned, and in a way, I don't want to come in and, you know, Horatio, everybody else got shit to say, and I don't want it to become just, you know, it's...
ToddIt's, you know, we both have supported cannabis legalization for as long as I've known each other and our life, and that's really what the bottom line is, you know what I mean? And I think, you know, that's, we're always going to support the change of cannabis, and we don't have to sit here arguing about it in some ways. It's beyond our control. I mean, we're not that, we're just two people.
ToddWe've said our piece. What happens will happen at the voter box. I mean, you know, and I just didn't want to dominate The conversation today with a bunch of us bickering about the details of what ifs. Because that's what it was down to, what ifs. What if, what if, what if.
SpeakerAnd we don't know. But I did make the news today. Look at New York Times. You did?
ToddYeah, Donnie was in the New York Times today. Look at this photo. Look at Dapper, I would say. Look at Dapper.
BubblemanDapper D. That's awesome.
SpeakerOh, I don't know where to go with this. If you want to talk about it more, that's fine. You can talk about hash, too. There you go. Hash. Hey, it's all hash to me, man.
BubblemanIt's all cannabis.
SpeakerHow about a bong rip?
BubblemanI think you should do at least a couple of those. Why not?
SpeakerLet's do a bong rip. Well... Bong rip.
BubblemanMy bong is very clean, but I will certainly have a vapor rip.
SpeakerDirty.
BubblemanA little bit of this rosin that's buttered right out and greased out.
SpeakerYeah, I got a little bit of that myself.
BubblemanI've never had rosin grease out. No? No. No, I have stuff that I leave out for, I mean, months at this point in time, not even weeks, and it just turns hard and like a glass, and it sort of turns into shatter. But I noticed some of this other stuff, if I wrap it up, from the West Coast crew, that almost all of it buttered out. Looks like terp juice that Tony made or something.
SpeakerI wonder why. Just so much terp still left in it or what?
BubblemanYeah, I don't know what's the deal. I mean, geez, we've had endless conversations about this, and there's been all sorts of theories thrown around. And, man, one day Hash Church will get the Hash Church lab, and we'll just be like, let's send it to the lab, and we'll talk about that next week after the lab has gone through all of those samples.
SpeakerOr as we speak, right? That'd be cool. But their hash is really good. I like it. Fucking killer.
BubblemanTheir rosin's great too. Definitely not seeing anything negative about it just other than it buttered out. I am not in Jamaica. BR, BR, BR, BR. Just listening to the guys in chat. People are asking about Jamaica and the World Cannabis Cup that's happening there in a couple of weeks. Really looking forward to this. Thank you so much for joining us.
BubblemanAnd potentially Hash. So we'll see how it goes. It'll be interesting. It was pretty chill last year when Tony and I went to the Stepping High Festival in Negril. There was cops, you know, on site, but they were all just kind of hanging out, sitting with their machine guns while we were all just like blazing out of the mothership and the denails like nobody's business. So it was definitely interesting to see.
BubblemanFor any of you that have been to Jamaica, it's very easy to get arrested in Jamaica and Shaken down or at least, you know, fined for cannabis. And I guess over the years it escalated to the point where the tourists weren't feeling it as bad as the local people. The local people were getting busted with a joint and, you know, the chaos that would ensue. It basically, I really should know his name, Dodson, I believe.
BubblemanCourtney Dodson or Dodson something. He was killed by the police, right? They decided to do their two-ounce decrim. He was killed over a spliff, to be honest. Bashed over the head with a wooden stick and died on his way to the hospital. And that was really kind of the end of it. That was when the Jamaican people, and the Jamaican people do things like this every once in a while where they literally will revolt.
BubblemanWhere it's just literally like they'll hit the streets, they'll stop traffic, they will like, you are fucking changing this now. And it really instigated somehow this time more than any other times because please don't think this was the first man killed for a spliff in Jamaica. I'm sure that there's been many, many, many over the years. So it gets to a point where, you know, the illegality, the prohibition of cannabis is a horrible thing when you are spending time in jail, when you're having your families ripped apart, when you're having everything that you've worked for taken away.
BubblemanBut to escalate to the point of death, it just sort of gets to the point where, you know, something had to be done right away, and that's Jamaica... Thank you for watching.
BubblemanI visited the Jamaica, Kingston, which I think was the first time a US president might have ever visited Jamaica. If not, it's definitely been 40 plus years since one of them did. And once he visited and left, we really, everything went quiet. So I'm really looking forward to getting back there this trip and, you know, finding out what the vibe is on the street, finding out what the vibe is in the news, and finding out what the vibe is with the business people sort of behind the scenes.
BubblemanHopefully in the next few months we'll see, you know, I guess a federal program because Jamaica is a whole country. It's not going to be some small mini program. They're going for the full-blown. From what I saw, they're really trying. From what I saw, what they released in the newspaper in regards to the cannabis laws that they wrote, it seemed as though if it was true and if it happens the way they wrote, it could potentially be one of the greatest cannabis laws You know, I don't know if I'd call it an initiative or a policy or whatever you want to call it, but it is one of the greatest ever because they literally took into account everything from the transport to the processing to all the different types of licenses that could occur from, you know, hotels being able to have licenses where people could smoke on...
BubblemanOn site where the country itself was going to offer smoking licenses. So when you flew into the country, they could ask you, like, oh, are you going to be smoking ganja while you're here? And you could be like, oh, yeah, give me a two-week ganja pass. And you get your little pass. And I'm kind of hoping that they make them not too expensive, but still, like, nice.
BubblemanYou know, so it's a collectible item. You go to Jamaica, you do your two-week trip. Sure, it's a fun thing. It's a recreational thing. Got your little pass. Great. Also stoked on the idea of cannabinoid saturation spas where you could literally go to a spa like any spa in the world where you have all the healing of different modalities of healing combined with endocannabinoid saturation of phytocannabinoids.
BubblemanSo you could get all the different types of oral consumption of cannabinoids and maybe many new things will be designed in the next five to ten years of people finally being able to do the science and Matt, when Bernie mentioned that he wanted to take cannabis off the Schedule 1, I literally, I mean, I know these guys don't, you know, I know these guys, they say things so we react.
BubblemanBut that was hard not to react to. Like, holy shit! Was that the first time anyone has ever suggested at that level that cannabis be removed from Schedule 1? Do you guys know?
SpeakerYes. Categorically, yes. First time on a presidential stage to get That much PR, absolutely. You bet. I don't think a candidate's ever come out to say that they should legalize. You know, people have won in the past. I mean, it's basically in the post, what, Nixon era that we've had to deal with this, since the Controlled Dangerous Substance Act, or the CSA, or whatever it was called.
ToddYeah, it was definitely Nixon that actually formed the war on drugs. Yeah. He actually fired the DBA and started all of this.
SpeakerYou know what it was a result of?
ToddHistorically, it's interesting. Timothy Leary got busted with cannabis coming from Mexico, and he constitutionally challenged the marijuana laws and won in the Supreme Court. Anybody who's really interested in marijuana law reform can go back and read the Leary case. And for a small time, the laws were kind of screwed up in America because of Tim Leary.
SpeakerHe challenged the constitutionality of the Stamp Act, which was still in place, right? But the crux of the matter was you couldn't get a stamp, but they did have a law saying that if you had this stamp, you could grow it, right? But it was basically impossible to get the stamp because of the Schedule I listing. But you're absolutely right, Todd. It was Timothy Lurie who challenged that.
ToddRight, so when Nixon got into office, what he did is created the DEA and CSA, the Controlled Substances Act. And, you know, and one of the things that Dr. Todd McCorea brought up a long time ago, he's now deceased, he was the author of the Marijuana Medical Papers, the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission Report. It was a compendium on about 100 years of medical information. That he found, because when he was working for the government in the 60s, it was right after McCollum basically found THC.
ToddAnd in America, that was considered classified for a short amount of time. And when Dr. MacArea realized this, he was infuriated, much like Don is about monopolies. And what happened was is it caused him to quit his job and actually put together a compendium on all of the literature of medical cannabis he could find that was available publicly and he became a huge advocate of medical cannabis.
ToddAnd his position was is that we had to de-schedule cannabis because it doesn't fit in the schedules as the schedules are written. And I think he's right.
SpeakerThere shouldn't be any natural herbs in the Schedule of Controlled Substances because no company's got the incentive to spend $100 million to prove them safe and effective for use when anybody else can sell the herb.
ToddAnd longevity. They have a grandfather clause that should be placed into it because simply they've been around for so long. And that's what he felt, that the safety and effectivity over a long period of time justified their exclusion. And not an inclusion like, look, if somebody comes along and whips up some chemicals in their backyard, I get it. We don't want that kid peddling it to your daughter down the street in a goddamn Girl Scout cookie.
ToddBut the truth is, is cannabis has been around for millennia. We've seen it. We know it. We trust it. It shouldn't be included in these lists of chemicals that we as humans have made in the last 20th century.
SpeakerRight. A drug is defined as a chemical. It's a synthetic active ingredient that mimics something that's in the body and that binds to the things in the body. And these are phytochemicals. And as their constitution in cannabis, yeah, they're absolutely, it shouldn't be on the list at all because it is. It's a plant. Now, again, if you start extracting and playing around with the active ingredients and you can patent something, I mean, that's what keeps, you know, big pharma out, which is that they can't patent it.
SpeakerAnd if they could patent it, they could afford to do the clinical trials would then give them exclusive rights. But again, if you're going to use cannabis, why would you need to get your cannabis or your cannabinoids and a pill from a big company, right? You would just go down to your local grower or grow your own.
BubblemanYou know, it's an interesting conversation that gets brought up. One of our Hashtag members, if you guys remember, Alexander, he is the German fellow that uses the Bedrocan. He goes through about $3,000, 3,000 euros with a Bedrocan herb each month.
BubblemanAnd I'm not exactly sure what is exactly happening. I have invited him to come in, but I don't know if he's gotten the message on time. But he had some problems here recently, and it's pretty serious problems. It's looking like they want to put him in jail for doing what he was doing. Yes, it's kind of a mess. He gave me a brief letdown that they want to get him off of the cannabis and they want to get him on the pills.
BubblemanSo they've got this Drohibnol that they want him to take. And in fact, he might end up going to jail. And that's what the conversation was about, whether he could get his cannabis in jail. And I really want him to come and talk about this because it seems as though finally the German government is going after him and causing him problems. They want to give him Drohibnol.
BubblemanAnd it's 5,000 euros.
BubblemanI believe a week. I want to give him 30 months. So that's 120 weeks times 5,000. I'm sure you guys remember him from some months back where he came in and showed us all his Bedrocam herb and talked about how he has his... Thanks for watching. See you next time.
BubblemanThank you. Thank you. Thank you.
BubblemanYou know, two years, if he ends up at Stony Mountain, it's definitely like that's a hard two years. If he ends up at Milner's Ridge or what's the other one, Headingley, still pretty bad. I'd plant. I mean, my goodness. So I see us going forward. I see us going, you know, taking a few steps back here as well. Can I point out something?
ToddAnything in jail sucks, dude. You're away from your home, your dogs, your loved ones, your friends, your bed, your pillow, your staff. Anywhere you go sucks. There's no prison that you could have to go sleep in your home.
BubblemanThere's a prison in Manitoba that's a farm. It's called The Farm. And everyone that's in prison wants to go to The Farm. The Farm is like there's animals, there's work that can be done that's like cognitive labor and work that's not just like hammering out license plates. You're working with animal stuff. And my friends that did time there were just like, listen man, anyone that's ever done time at Stoney and has ever done time at the farm, they know those are different kind of times.
SpeakerYeah, I think that the Bernie Sanders speaking out on cannabis is just on the front end of You know, the reform that we have to have in prison reform in this country, which is that there's a lot of non-violent drug offenders who are locked up and they need to be converting these grows or these prisons into large-scale grows. That's what they need to be doing. In Colorado, there was a story about a year ago that they were converting what used to be a prison into a big grow.
SpeakerI don't think that ever happened, but it's just really sad because that's the crux of the issue. It's a It's a civil issue that we can't address by just saying, okay, you know, legalize cannabis. We have to make sure that we make sure that we know anybody incarcerated under incarcerated and equated laws. Major feedback happening.
BubblemanYeah, that's Greg that just came in. I just muted his mic. He's got a bit of a feedback issue going on there.
SpeakerSo as wonderful as what's happening in Colorado and Washington and Oregon and other places, how would you like to be sitting in a federally owned incarcerated prison because you're basically, again, like in Todd's situation, just somebody who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
ToddI was in the right place at the right time. They just didn't like me.
SpeakerYeah, but the laws suck, and you've got to afford a huge lawyer, which creates a big financial drain on you and your loved ones. It totally fucks up your life. Again, I know people who are no longer on this planet because of weed incarceration. It's just not fair that it's okay in one zip code and not okay in another. This is not the divided states of America.
SpeakerThis is the United States of America, right? And basically the law should be not based on your zip code, whether you have an Ohio zip code. I live in Pennsylvania. You know, we live in the state next door. We have a bill that's in our legislature too. I mean, same situation as Ohio. They're scared of big business coming in here and basically taking over, you know, What has been a huge industry in the state for years?
SpeakerThe black market, of course.
BubblemanWell, you know, it's definitely... I've heard that they're releasing, what, 14,000 inmates here in the next couple of days? Do you guys have any numbers on those? I heard it was around 14,000 non-violent drug offenders that they were going to let out of federal prison in the U.S., so that's definitely a step in the right direction. I mean, it's not even close to the maybe however million...
BubblemanIt's got to be a couple of million people serving time in the U.S., no?
SpeakerYeah. I mean, again, Mark, that's at the front end of where Sanders' position is here is that we have to address not just the symptoms but address the cause of why we have this issue. We incarcerate more people, and again, unfairly, people of color than any other, you know, civilized country on earth. And we have no, you know, health care.
BubblemanWe've got Greg DeHoot just showed up. Did I pronounce that right, Greg? Awesome. Long time cannabis activist from England, Brighton. Brighton? Yeah, Brighton in the house. Well, he's got some good news to tell us. Apparently, he's going to take a dab, so I'll yammer on for a little bit. But he wanted to come in today and share a little bit of knowledge with some amazing thing that they just had go down there.
BubblemanAnd so once he's done his dab, we'll unmute him. We'll probably have to mute the rest of ourselves up because he does have quite a feedback on him. Once you've taken your rip there, dude, let us know how things are going in the UK because someone literally just said, we are 15 years behind the US in the UK with this cannabis thing. It's nice to see that there are activists in the UK definitely fighting the good fight.
BubblemanI can remember from years ago, was his name Colin? Colin Davies? Is that? I met him through Noel Van Schyack, and he was like hardcore, man. That guy was like, I don't give a fuck. I'll get it done. Let's make it happen. That's the kind of activism we need to get that foot in the door. Build places that don't even have the foot in the door.
ToddYou know? A lot of places.
BubblemanYes, my head looks ginormous, I know. I'm very close to my... I'm using my son's computer and I can't seem to figure out the camera. It seems really close up, so we'll see what happens. All right, you want me to unmute you, Greg, and you want to talk to us or what? What have we got here?
BubblemanOh, you've got to unmute yourself, I think. Try unmuting the mic. Oh wait, here, let me just, here you go.
SpeakerHow's it going? How's the room? Having a good hash judge? Yeah, we just started quite late. Oh right, it's a late start, is it today? Okay. I sometimes get confused with the time difference. I don't always catch the beginning of it. I always, I'm kind of about to stick it on during the week or when I've got a trimming job, I'll catch up on like three or four of them.
SpeakerAnd just sit there for 12 hours and just hash church all day. Hallelujah. Yeah, man, that's how you do it.
BubblemanYeah, man, that's how you do it.
SpeakerBut yeah, we just had a pretty incredible event in Brighton last night. But for those who don't know what's going on in the UK, we have the United Kingdom Cannabis Social Club movement. And sort of like we tip our hats to those in Spain who have led the way and sort of like really sort of like taken over The sort of like, similar to what the California initiative, like the cooperative idea, sort of like from, you know, 96 onwards, they started the cannabis social clubs, they pool all their plants together, and they grow between them, they share the product at a reasonable price, and they, you know, after 10 years they've managed to get themselves into a situation where they've got cannabis social clubs, Now, over here in the UK, we don't have the same right to privacy as they have in Spain, so we can't actually grow legally at home.
SpeakerWe can't pool our plants. We can't have cannabis social clubs. We don't have vape lounges like you do in Canada. See, back here on the mainland, the island, shall I say, where the queen sits on her throne, we can't actually... We want to express some of the freedoms that you now have over there in Canada. But what we want to do is we want to move in that direction where we have cannabis social club, vape lounges, for people to freely consume cannabis if they're a medical user or an adult.
SpeakerOver here it's 18, I believe it's like 21 most places in North America. But last night, anyway, Brighton Cannabis Club, probably one of the most progressive in the country. It's right down on the southeast coast. Lovely Victorian holiday spot. We've got a really active club, and we had about 100 people come to our event. We have an event every month, Super Stoner Saturday Session. And we have, you know, 100 plus people come through and just have like sort of all out blaze up, you know, a day.
SpeakerBut last night, for the first time, we had it in an indoor sort of like licensed venue. And everyone had an absolutely awesome time. We had sort of like denails and people pressing out rosin in there and everything. Some really seriously nice glass, some really great extracts. Just like, you know, Andy McDabbin's stuff. We had some of Ramon's stuff there from, you know, from different people coming from all over the country.
SpeakerWe had people from Carlisle, which is up in Scotland. So they're traveling seven or eight hours to come down for the Halloween session. So obviously it was, you know, high on Halloweed. But we had a seriously large amount of edibles there as well. Cherry Hayes, she's been building sort of like a great name for herself in the UK. She had some skull candy cakes. And if you check out, they'll be on my Instagram later.
SpeakerAnd if you go on the Brighton Cannabis Club Instagram now, go and follow them. They've got everything that we've got going on that goes on there. They, you know, that was a really impressive looking edibles. They taste great. There's like, I've got Crohn's disease, so I can't have like gluten and dairy. So for the first time she made a load of gluten and dairy free edibles. So last night after I'd driven home, I stuffed my face and, you know, for the next two hours I was just sitting up going, oh my God, people are right.
SpeakerThese things taste amazing. I can't believe I've been missing out on this for a year. But yeah, I was stoked. And a lot of our events have sort of catered for the sort of like 18 to 25 kind of age group. Whereas this one, because it was in a proper venue, we actually had a lot of, and it was in the evening event, people had a lot more sort of like room to sit down and spread out, bring their stuff.
SpeakerCome with their friends and sort of like see what this experience is all about that we're trying to offer. And it was a lot more of a sort of like an older mature crowd and I think people went home a little bit surprised that that kind of thing just happened in the UK. The Facebook status system, like Instagram, Twitter, it's been really fun to watch. People said I can't believe I was actually in the UK.
SpeakerI thought I was in some kind of progressive country. For anyone who doesn't really, I see True's just popped in the chat, here's a go at True. For the UK, anyone out there in the UK knows what kind of reefer madness we have here. We have the Daily Mail, which is practically Fox News in a newspaper, and they release articles like cannabis kills 30,000 people a year.
SpeakerAnd they get away with it. So that's the kind of mentality that we're up against, and we're up against it constantly. We just had a massive drug debate in Parliament, and we had a petition that got 250,000 signatories to call for the reclassification, not reclassification, but for the licensing of cannabis outlets and legally home growing. We keep pushing the cannabis social club model like regardless of whether they want to talk about what we're doing, we're going to continue doing that because what's the point of asking for something if you're not going to get your hands dirty and actually do it for yourself.
SpeakerWe've got about 80 such clubs trying to do the same kind of thing but none of them are quite hitting the mark that Brighton are hitting at the moment and they're really putting on a good show for people. We do something every month We have an event and... New people come literally from all over the country. Nottingham, Birmingham, Sheffield, Devon, Manchester, Liverpool, and it's absolutely crazy. New strains are coming out to the table.
SpeakerPeople are meeting up and going, oh shit, we need to do a project together. And the interaction is just like, fuck, this is what we needed. I went over to America in 2011 to get medicine. Primarily, I was told I had five years to live And I went to Colorado, I got the oil and went on my trail around the West Coast from Colorado down to California, Oregon, Washington, saw how it was all being done and sort of like made the choice to come back to Come back to Blighty, to England, and really sort of try and make it happen.
SpeakerIt's five years later, things are moving on, and it's much different. Before, we didn't have more than sort of like 10 activists sort of like doing anything, and now we've got like people coming out the woodwork. People have got their own medical companies. Everyone's labeling up their extracts properly. How long have they been purged? Have they had the mystery oil removed? People are really talking about all these things that before, you know, if I mentioned anything like this, people looked at me like, you smoke pure?
SpeakerAnd that was, you know, that was an issue. Now it's just like, you haven't got a red blue? And so, like, things have moved on and that was part of my mission, I think, when I came, you know, came back from America. I was like, I need, you know, I need this culture in my life because, you know, it is part of my life. It makes my life possible.
SpeakerAnd I just want to like big up massive respect to everyone in the Brighton Cannabis Club that's making that happen because without them there's no standard being set in the UK for the events that need to go on. And I don't know if anyone like from the UK is listening that doesn't know about these cannabis social clubs but they need to just start one for themselves. If there's nothing going on in their area they're the right person to do it if they want it to happen.
SpeakerWe've got a whole model that we've put together. We've got a whole legal team released. They're a drugs charity that have been together for like 45 years. The oldest drugs charity in the world, in fact. They've given us so much support in writing our model. It's probably one of the most comprehensive We've been definitely within Europe probably, you know, I don't know, you know, quite how much it compares to any sort of like, you know, club model in the US, but it doesn't quite compare to Colorado's state regulatory model, but for a non-profit cannabis social club model, There's something definitely to work with.
SpeakerIt talks about plant numbers, just how to deal with your members in terms of legality, the best advice to give them, how to open your bank accounts, the best way to start
SpeakerThank you for watching.
SpeakerI'd love to be able to, for people to be able to come to Brighton and just pop into the Vape Lounge, like, when they come to the UK. We're 30 minutes on the train from Gatwick Airport, which is, you know, not a bad pit stop to me. So, like, like you, like you get off the train in Amsterdam, you go to Voyagers or Green Place or wherever your first stop, it should be Brighton Cannabis Club, really, in the UK.
SpeakerAnd that's what we're going for. We've got some absolutely killer genetics. I've got to say, the gourmet burgers of last night were absolutely insane. They had this sativa salt, which was obviously medicated salt on the chips and triple fry chips and the burgers. It was absolutely nuts. I don't know if you've got anything to ask about it, but the UK is popping off right now.
BubblemanWell, I was definitely going to say, someone at the end of their podcast They gave you, they said you were going to die in time.
SpeakerIncredible.
BubblemanIncredible.
SpeakerWhat was that, man? You broke up a bit.
BubblemanI got to, when I talk, I have to meet you, or it's just going to read out to your speaker, so let's meet you real quick. It's never quick. It's never quick. Let's see. Okay. There we go. Okay, what I was saying, no, you are, let's try that again.
MarkOnly one of us should be muted.
SpeakerCan you mute your mic, Greg?
BubblemanOh, there he goes. Perfect. Yeah, there was a mute war. I was muting it, and then he was unmuting it, and then I was unmuting it, and he was muting it. What I said was, the doctors that gave you five years to live, I believe that was five years ago, you look amazing for someone at the end of your life cycle who's supposed to be dead. You look great!
MarkWell, I'll puff to that.
SpeakerYeah, hats off to you, Greg. I've seen you go through a lot of struggles over the last few years since I've known you. And it's incredible to see someone who's got so many health issues and things to deal with to go out of their way and really be an activist and go out there and put yourself out in the public eye and fight for what you believe.
SpeakerIt's not an easy thing to do. There's people like you that have kind of given our country a figurehead and a voice and kind of made people come from out of the shadows and actually be proud and not ashamed to consume cannabis for medical reasons. So people like yourself and Clark French, we've got a lot of love for you and we owe you a lot as a community in the UK and I hope people appreciate all that you've been through and the trials and tribulations that have got you to where you are today.
SpeakerAnd I hope it continues in the same vein. I can't wait to get back and come to one of the Brighton Cannabis Club meetings. That's definitely on the agenda.
SpeakerYeah, you can...
SpeakerPeople call it the grandma's purse candy. People call that one the grandma's purse candy.
SpeakerIt's got like a real old lady and kind of soft Not gold, but kind of, yeah, just a weird like mothball lavender kind of aroma. It's a funky one. I know the one you mean. That's awesome, man. So nice to see people get your name. Awesome.
SpeakerI've got some questions at the moment. And to share some nubs again, I need to, my passport's in renewal stages at the moment. I fucked up on the signature. So yeah, I need to get over to the mainland. Yeah, sure man. Come over, there's plenty of flavors over.
BubblemanSpeaking of flavors, I want to welcome Tony Terpine into the room. He's just got his mouth on the rig there as I'm welcoming him. Good to see you, dude, for the late, late Hash Church.
MarkYeah, man. Thanks for having me. I don't know what happened. My oven said three. My phone said two. I actually went to bed for Halloween at like 9.30, and I must have slept for like 15 hours. Was there daylight savings today? Yeah. It was?
BubblemanYeah.
MarkOkay. I've been in a complete twilight zone. And then I see this thing from you like, dude, hash shirts. And I was like preparing my rig, cleaning it precisely for 2 p.m. And so I'm like, okay, 2 p.m. The clock says 3 p.m. I thought it was 2 p.m. And you're like, dude, you're like an hour late. So I was just like, I had to hit refresh on my phone and then it went back to 2.
MarkSo I apologize.
BubblemanHey, no apologies. How goes the Terp game?
MarkThe Terp game's good. I've got some Gorilla Glue right now. Pure Gorilla Glue. I've got some, let's see here, Lemon Pie.
BubblemanOoh, that Lemon Pie, dude. You had that one time before. Yeah. The Jack Frost. Oh, yeah. Some Golden Goat. Did Jack Frost have a little color or was that just the light shining through it?
MarkNo, I've been dipping in it. So as you dip in it, it starts to change. So this is what happens when you start dipping in it. You start to add cannabinoids to it and it gets to it. This one's all dipped out. So you see the ring? It's gold. Yep. Yep. Very lovely, very lovely. Yeah, so I'm looking forward to sharing these with you in Jamaica.
BubblemanWell, I know I posted that on Facebook. I said, come by the booth and get terpy with us.
MarkYeah, it's going to get way terpy. If you're in Jamaica and you look for the CRD Bubble Man section, you will 100% be able to try some local ital
BubblemanI'll have bubble made because I brought my bags and I have a denail press that I shipped them. No way. Yes way. Oh my God. Oh yeah, dude. So I should have some really nice Jamaican rosin, both from the bud and from the hatch.
MarkWell, this would be good. This is kind of like a, I know it's semi-work, but it's definitely like a vacation, something that's less needed for me. I haven't been to Jamaica for a reset in a long time.
BubblemanExactly. It's not going to be like what we're normally doing where we're like driving from Kingston and we've got to go over here and we're going over there and then there's this three hour meeting. It's like literally more like the Stepping High Festival which is like the shit we just naturally be doing if we could be doing anyway. Filming and puffing and vaping and judging and I'm super stoked.
BubblemanYeah. I agree.
MarkThere's probably some shares, some do's and don'ts. With those out there, there's definitely like a lot of, you know, things that you want to be aware of. And I'm not trying to scare people, but they just need to be aware of like the type of environment and the area and what could happen if you're, you know, a tourist not really paying attention.
BubblemanYeah, true enough, true enough. It's, it is Jamaica. It's, especially Negril. Negril's almost like what I've always called like as an, it's almost an open asylum. And not from the Jamaican people at all, but the people that go there. There's like crazy people that go to Negril. And that's their style. You know what I mean? You just see these dudes walking on the side of the road and Just be like, I think that guy's been hammered for like 35 years straight.
MarkIt's kind of like a before Mardi Gras. I lived in New Orleans off of bourbon, and I've seen some weird shit before, and I'm used to it. I embrace it. I like things that are different in the world. But know that there's all kinds of people. It's an international type of like island hangout with all kinds of characters. Great, amazing, and shady. You know, like it's all there at the same time.
BubblemanFor sure. Well, I mean, put it this way. I'll say this much. The hustlers, I call them. The rent-a-dreads. They are the most incredible hustlers I've ever met anywhere in the whole planet. Like, I literally, like, I don't know if it's, like, what it is that makes them so good. Maybe it's that they need to be good. You know, it's that the Jamaican saying of, like, out of nothing is something.
BubblemanLike, they make, making something out of nothing. Man, some of those Some of those dudes are so slick and I've, you know, that's not to me what you would go to Jamaica and then leave Jamaica going, I really liked it. Because if you just got exposed to hustlers on the beach, you could leave Jamaica and say, I did not like that. But when you meet people, you know, like Kittis Eye and you go to his farm and he shows you his horses and his crops that he's got growing and you're like, some of the amazing chefs and cooks I've met.
MarkThe cooks, yeah, the cooks, the reggae artists, the chalice builder. There's a lot of handmade craft. There's a lot of amazing places to eat, the raw juice and foods and vegan restaurants. I mean, it's in the ocean. But yeah, no, those are the guys I was talking about. So like if you're walking across, if you're walking and across the street in a little tiny restaurant, In the back of the restaurant, somebody hollers at you.
MarkHey! Hey! He's actually trying to hustle you.
BubblemanAnd it's the laziest hustle ever. He's not even going to get up, bro. He's going to go, hey! And you're just going to be like, what? I'm going to go see what that guy's all about. And it's literally like he just got you to come to him. He's literally sitting across the street. Yeah, across the street. Thank you for watching.
MarkLike, telepathy thing they got going. So, you know, just beware of those kind of, like, funny things when you're coming there. The rest of it's fucking badass, you know?
BubblemanWe are going to have a great time, and I do wish more people from the panel were going to be there. It would be nice to see more Hash Churchers, but what we'll do is we'll represent this year. We'll show you guys that anything next year would be a detrimental choice, and we'll make sure that we get more of the panelists there, um,
MarkWell, and I would say that, like, you know, think about the vibe itself. I like Amsterdam. You know, I went there the last couple years in a row. It's a cool place. I like the city. It's mostly, you know, I was mostly smoking and sleeping and eating danishes and desserts because that's what you do because it's cold and it's wet and you're like, We'll see you next time.
MarkThe vibe itself sets you kind of free. You definitely feel like you get disconnected the right way from where you're coming from, and it's a really nice mental vacation.
BubblemanYeah, Doug Derese just mentioned Amsterdam. Back in the 90s, you would meet some shady characters, too. Of course, in any city. We're not saying that Jamaica's exclusive. Vancouver, you meet super shady motherfuckers in Vancouver. Like, holy Christ. They used to, the shady motherfuckers in Vancouver, and this is, I don't even know why I want to tell this story, but they used to be able to sit on the streets and And they would know if you were a guy who was middling herb.
BubblemanIt was the backpack, it was the shoes, it was the truck, and they would just, you know, watch. And when you went inside, wherever you went inside, they'd smash out your window and steal your duffel bag. And I can't tell you how many stories, because keep in mind, in the 90s, Vancouver was a place where people brought hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars in cash, and they purchased hundreds to thousands of pounds of cannabis.
BubblemanSometimes they would purchase a ton at a time. Other people were flipping 10 packs. Some people were doing 100 packs, but there was so much herb being flipped. The one year it outdid forestry, which was like some multi-billion dollar export, like huge, almost double digit billion dollar export.
MarkThat's like free will to cut down forests and turn them into wood and products. Free will.
BubblemanYeah. And these motherfuckers, man, they were just, it was so often you would hear it. It was like, oh, I lost 300k US out of my car. Like, I just, I didn't want to carry it. I just thought it would be safe in the trunk, but they smashed the window and they popped the trunk. It's like, ooh. You could, there's a Vice episode. There's a back behind the scenes.
BubblemanIt's like, let's follow these two junkies around. Just found three cities.
MarkYeah, every city has their hustle. Like, Vancouver was hustling break-ins in cars.
ToddBrutal.
MarkAnd when I, What I'm saying is Negril has their hustle, and if you said you were going to Miami where I started, I would tell you, okay, there's extremely shady situations you want to avoid. And if you were like, yeah, I'm on South Beach, I'd be like, all right, so these blocks from this section, from this section, and these type of characters, and this kind of situation you want to avoid.
MarkEvery place has it, just like if you were Philly, Detroit, New York, I mean, L.A.,
BubblemanIt's just like anything. It's like when people ask me, well, can you find good pot there? And I'm like, well, I can. Can you? Because people would come to places, they say things like, oh, Jamaica has the worst pot ever. Oh, the weed in Vancouver was just shit. And I would tell both of those people to say, Re-adjust your statement and say, the herb that I was able to find in Jamaica, the herb that I was able to find in Vancouver was not that good.
BubblemanBecause really, it's on you if you can't find great herbs. After all, it's not great herbs' job to fucking find you. That's like the nose. The nose knows. Anyone catch that Steve Hayes drop there? The nose?
MarkWell, And then before we get too far away, I also want to say something because I took a triple look at Greg here because I met him in person in Amsterdam and did a little interview with him that I just remember discussing with him. Oh, he just popped away. He'll pop back. But that looks like Greg's younger brother. Right?
BubblemanYeah. I love that. I just love when people get healthy. That's all I'm going to say. It's like, you know, sure I'm happy for someone when they make a bunch of cash, but I'm really more happy for people when they get healthy. It's like, dude, you look healthy, man. Crohn's is a crazy disease, too, because when it gets real bad and starts just shutting down those systems, it's like you start looking pale and not good.
MarkYeah, you can't get nutrients into your body, your hair.
BubblemanThat's exactly what it looks like.
MarkYeah, so when somebody says, yeah, I've got that, I can see that in a patient when they walk up to me. But he looked incredible. I'm really glad to see that.
BubblemanYeah, hopefully he'll come back. He texted me earlier and said he wanted to come on Hash Church and he was excited and I was just like, I want to hear some positive news from the UK. Like, dude, I showed up in the UK, I mean, it was quite a few years ago. I think I went in 03 and I landed at Gatwick and I, Dean Ravana picked me up and we went to his shops and then I went back in 04 and I got a booth at the Wembley Stadium.
BubblemanI don't even know if it was called a hemp fair or a cannabis fair, but it was Wembley Stadium in fucking London. And it was like, we were puffing that place down. I just thought London was cool. I thought the UK was great. I was fucking puffing and Buddha was bringing me, Buddha was like super, like just starting. He had a grandma hash for me. Every day I was there, a full melt hash to give me.
BubblemanPerhaps your giddy aunt who was the amazing macro photographer that did the first clear dome shots on the screens on overgrow days. He came and shared his hash. It was just such an amazing event that it was only at the end of it that people were like, dude, you know that was kind of crazy? You know, you shouldn't really, like, you were just puffing like crazy, bro.
BubblemanLike, you could fucking, I can't believe you didn't get arrested. And I did the exact same thing in Berlin, Germany at a cannabis event. And I didn't even realize, because we were so, like, compartmental in the rest of the event, we were literally the only people at the whole event puffing. And I think it's why we were 100 people in front of our booth the whole time.
BubblemanPeople love the puff. Nice. Can you hear me?
SpeakerYeah, I can hear you, Horatio. It's funny, when Tony was like the do's and don'ts of Jamaica, and I just, I was thinking back to when Tony's first interaction with Jamaicans and his pipe, and I'm thinking about what's going to happen this time, and I'm like, he's going to be like, don't touch my mothership, don't, I thought it was instructions to Jamaicans from Tony. I didn't know it was like for Americans going to Jamaica.
SpeakerBecause then I was like, oh, he should watch out for the dreads that are in like Steven Seagal's heart to kill, like coke-beating dreads. Oh my God.
BubblemanYeah, we had some funny...
MarkI'm totally cool with people hitting pipes. Everybody does this with their hand.
BubblemanDude, you were in jail when the guy blew the water through your fucking quartz honey bucket. Thankfully, quartz is designed to go for... Thermal shocking is doable with quartz. Don't attempt it with glass or sapphire. You can heat quartz up as hot as fuck and then dump it in the water. This guy literally blew into the pipe and blew the water out the top of the bowl.
BubblemanTony was kind of like, he was just kind of like, he was like, listen, man. And then the guy was kind of like, no, you listen. And then it all kind of just got fine. Tony was just like, no, I'm just going to heat it up again for you, and I'll hold it. You've got to suck, though. Don't blow. It's how you get the hit. Just suck.
SpeakerYeah, the guy's like, you listen. Your pipe is fucked, bro. I'm trying to fucking clear it, and you've got this heater thing.
BubblemanWell it is, you know what, we're in a field with a little table and there's like 20 or 30 people. I mean anyone that watched the videos knows exactly because we recorded the vibe very accurately for how it happened. Super chill, lots of people just staring and what I loved about the people at the Stepping High Festival is how willing they were to take a giant rip.
BubblemanLike people were just, and of course, because it's Jamaica, they're all smoking spliffs. So they're smoking a spliff And exhaling as they come to the tip of the pipe to get their hit. Kiddus was the best because he'd smoke a hit, then take the hit, and then take the hit. Every time he took a dab, he took a puff of his joint first and last. I was like, damn, this guy's like going, tripling up, and Kiddus has to be.
MarkSo that's the thing, like where in Amsterdam people are afraid of the pure, right? And in Jamaica, once they're exposed to the pure, they only want the pure. They want ital. They want the pure, organic. That's really the vibe. How natural and organic can you make it? But when they get the pure, I think it's kind of like what he's talking about in the UK. You get liberated.
MarkSo Jamaica's becoming liberated from oppression. Thank you so much for joining us today.
MarkThey get more connected as a community going, this is okay. This is going to happen. And that's like the fucking, that's the coolest part. And I saw that happen a couple of different spots in the U.S., but not on a whole island that's been really repressed for an extremely long time over this.
BubblemanWell, that's just it. And you know, it's been so repressed that you have elderly people literally whooping their grandkids and their kids' asses for smoking herb. While those same elderly people couldn't get through certain pains without the teas, And the little salves that they might make. It's very much a part of the culture, but that part of the culture was kind of like suppressed. It was only the young and the musicians, the activists that wanted to have a loud voice and be like, you know, I mean, Peter Tosh got beaten many a times for promoting the herbs back in the 70s.
BubblemanI mean, you listen to some of his lyrics and we really aren't talking about too much different than from all the things Peter, you know, mentioned in his songs in the 70s. I mean, he really had a deeper understanding of cannabis and prohibition because of being on the front line of it, of course, and then becoming so famous and having so many, you know, cops in Jamaica just like, oh, I can bash that guy in the head.
BubblemanHe thinks herbs good. It's just a pretty incredible thing to see.
MarkYeah, that's a once-in-a-lifetime character, you know, where the character's living Life, living those experiences, getting beaten down and still to get up and sing, knowing that there's like a population that wants to kill you.
BubblemanYou know, maybe we should get in touch with Andrew Tosh while we're in Jamaica, and maybe we could head over to Bluefields where Peter's buried, and we could do a little hash church from there maybe, you know? Like, I know his mom's passed on now, she just passed on a few years ago, she was in her 90s, but Andrew usually hangs out there when he's on the island, and I think there's even a few other family members.
BubblemanThey've got Ganja Field there, and Peter's got a bit, his crypt is there with this sort of cool little building that's got all this really beautiful art all over it. Last time I went there probably was with Gypsy Nirvana and filmed for the international Canagraphic Jamaican video that we did back in 03 and that was with like Wally Duck and Gypsy and myself. Really fun times, those old, you know, that was history, that was like 12 years ago that we were in Jamaica turning them on to water hash and extracting resin with water and ice and I'll tell you man, like A couple of people that are that pro-herb, I've never seen a happier look or a happier vibe on anyone than when I showed people how to make water hash in Jamaica.
BubblemanEach time, back in the days, you always got the eyebrow raise. Everyone would go, as the 73 bag got pulled, but in Jamaica, it was more like, it felt more important. It felt like, oh, this is... This is going to change everything. Like, that guy just had mash, which is the trim from the bud, and it was buried in a garbage bag on his property. And I was like, do you have anything to run?
BubblemanHoping he would have some bud. This was the first time I ever made hash in Jamaica. And if you Google, or yeah, Bubble Man Jamaica bubble hash, and you look at the photos under images, you'll see these two Rastas standing. Kind of bent down and they're stirring with sticks. And this was my friend James, who I got turned on two years ago. A wonderful, wonderful man. I have him on film talking about vegetarianism and he's got this one line where he says, You don't have to kill.
BubblemanAnd it was so profound. To me, I'd already been a vegetarian for some years, but hearing him say it in this simplistic way as he stood there in his bare feet on his property in this beautiful, lush area close to the Caribbean Sea, I just thought, man, this guy is like on point. Anyway, he pulled that mashup out of the ground. I looked at it as potentially the worst cereal I'd ever run.
BubblemanBut I ran it. We ran it together, and we photographed it and did some filming, and we got about 10, 11 grams. And I remember his son, who was kind of like in-between hustler guy, he was a big dready too, but he was definitely like on the cusp of hustling and getting into the more conscious, it's a very dichotomic vibe, you know, they oppose one another, this sort of conscious, you know, the Rastafarian, the giving, it's very different from over here where it's like the gold chains, the acquire as much as you can.
BubblemanSo it's a neat vibe to see, but that kid went to the beach and sold that hash for 20 US dollars a gram and came back with 220 US dollars. And I remember seeing, this was, I'm standing at this guy's house and the whole wall of his house is open because he hasn't gotten to the point where he could make that money to finish the house that he's lived in for 18 years or whatever.
BubblemanSo to see that money come in and to see him put that together, it was just like you're not just teaching someone how to make hash here, you're actually creating You're creating an economy. You're creating a small business that is right along lines with exactly what they're doing. Why would you throw that away? Turn it into hash for the tourists. They want that shit.
SpeakerDude, that's major for Jamaican people. With that tradition of having nine jobs, you need an occupational portfolio. It's something I've always had.
SpeakerYou can tell it in my nature, obviously being Jamaican, just in a different... Thank you for joining us.
SpeakerEverything is like, you can only make so much money, but if you have nine jobs like that, taxi driver, you know, you do these little odd ends, life works out and people actually can become wealthy. So, like, economically, I mean, right now I know that when you go in this time around and break out the rosin, it, with so many more farmers, like, no, you don't understand, I'll have tons.
SpeakerIt's way bigger than, you know, a person's medical grow here in like BC. An acre, you know, changes a whole village forever once they come out with a couple of 20-gallon bags.
BubblemanIt's true, man, and I've seen it time and time again. Yet, I did see that dichotomy coming in too where... In the early days, and James was not one of the people that did this. James was such a good vibe and such a good soul that he would never consider doing this. But many people that I taught, I ended up on farms and orange groves and in incredible places throughout Jamaica teaching people how to do this process.
BubblemanSometimes they were fucking serious dudes, man. Sometimes they were fucking roots reggae Rasta dudes. So it was like a whole variety of different people. And, you know, a lot of them said to me, you can't show anyone else. Don't show anyone else. And I would say, oh no, listen, I'm showing everyone else. Not only will I not show anyone else, I'm going to show everyone else. And not just in your country, in every fucking country.
BubblemanAnd they'd just be like, they couldn't believe I was saying that to them. They'd just be like, What do you say to that? Get the guns! No, it wasn't that kind of a vibe. It wasn't a threat. It was a request, like a please, please. Because it was fear and scarcity, which is like, man, I don't know. It's easy, easy, easy to come from scarcity when you grow up in a poorer nation, when there's less opportunities than in another nation.
BubblemanSo I understand it completely. But at the same time, I mean, I grew up in a way that in Canada would be like, yeah, that wasn't really like, yeah, a little bit of the lower sort of income families living in a duplex, living in an area that has all sorts of different sort of crime and trouble. I remember growing up, the house across the street, one time their garage got blown up.
BubblemanSomeone put a bomb in their garage. Another time a woman was murdered across the street from me. You know, I had a drive-by shooting four doors down from me when I grew up, like, That's just how, you know, that particular neighborhood of Winnipeg was in the 70s.
SpeakerWell, I think what's good about this round in Jamaica is it becomes Jamaica as a united, instead of parish by parish, group by group, village by village, it's them uniting in a, it becomes, they click in their brain, no, this is more like the farm co-op, we're regionally going to be able to give our inputs that will get exported. They're on a different vibe than, holy shit, this is the greatest thing since sliced bread, please don't teach anyone else, it's our only chance.
SpeakerIt becomes how many other people did you teach this to? Maybe we can group together and form a brand.
BubblemanYeah, exactly. And I kept trying to explain that as well when I was in Jamaica because they're very concerned that people will come to Jamaica and take it from them like they have done to everything else in the country, like literally from bauxite to sugar cane to the rice. Everything has been taken from them since they were taken from Africa. And so you have this situation where, you know, they don't want that to happen.
BubblemanAnd I just keep saying this, listen, you guys... Our Jamaica, and nobody can take that away from you. It's Jamaica. Another country can't take that away from you. America can't be like, we're going to grow herb and call it Jamaica. No, it's yours. It's your country. Just make sure that you guys... It seems as though, because the people really, it's a different kind of place where I don't think they're going to allow, and I mean by they, the overall populace, for this to be allowed without benefiting the country.
BubblemanIt has to benefit the country. It just has to. And it's got such a possibility to benefit on such a grander scale. That it's inspirational to even have a tiny little part in it that if I can play a little part in that, you know, and have like watch Jamaica's infrastructure build, watch hospitals get built and watch, you know, old folks' homes get built and like all the different sort of infrastructure that is needed there, schools for God's sakes, you know, and then pack those schools up with all the different sort of equipment that schools require.
BubblemanI have a love for Jamaica. I have since I was married there in 95. And I get to go there and be there on my 20 year wedding anniversary with my family in the next couple of days and I'm super fucking stoked about it.
MarkThat's crazy. That's a crazy full circle.
BubblemanYeah. My cycles are 10 and 20 year cycles and I've had a lot of them. It's pretty trippy. For only being 42 years old, I've had a fair amount of 10 and 20 year cycles. Things that just happen in a certain amount of years. It's like it'll happen here and it won't happen again for like 10 years.
MarkThat's like my dad's got a 10 year cycle. Like he's just like, that's what my brother and I would say. He'd hit a home run every 10 years. You know, it's like bam, he's on the block.
SpeakerBam.
MarkYou know, but then it's like nothing for 9 years. You know? But yeah. No, it was like an interesting, it was, it's interesting when people have those, uh, The synchronicities that line up 10 and 20 years from the time that you start something. Yes. And the time that's happening there, and I always said it too, it's like I've always wanted to do the same thing. It's like we want to teach you how to grow bigger and better resin in your own way so that way when we process it, it has like the best use and best quality possible.
BubblemanOur agenda is for them to do great. Yeah. That's the agenda. That is the agenda.
MarkSo the extract is great. It's awesome. Can't wait to get things going again.
BubblemanAnd hey, I didn't even welcome True to the room. He came in and he had a conversation with Greg, and I want to welcome True into the room. Into the room.
SpeakerHey, man. I'm sad I'm not going to be coming to Jamaica, bro. I'm so sad about that, but I know you're going to have a blast. I'm excited for everyone to go out there and for Jamaica to experience it as well. I think it's going to be good for them to have something like that because I think they will really welcome it with open arms and it will be a success.
SpeakerI think it's going to be incredible. I've got some friends going out there. He's already sent me photos of the fields that his family have got and the plants that they've got there and Yeah, he's going to be coming to see you with a whole bunch of flavors from Orange Hill to Rosin Up and Sift. So, yeah.
BubblemanHe'll bring me weed and it'll be grown by my friends.
SpeakerIt will be. When I looked here, I thought this really looks high, high, high quality. So if the bubble man don't know this guy, I'm going to be surprised.
BubblemanThat's awesome, dude. Very cool. Hey, I wanted to quickly say, too, for any of you guys coming out to the Cannabis Cup in Jamaica this November 12th and 15th, a great idea is to bring any type of toys or children's clothing. Anything like a jumper or any type of these things to be used for the youth, it's a great thing to bring and leave behind on the island.
BubblemanThey can always use some new little shoes or pants and shirts and whatnot and toys. If you've got some toys that aren't being played with that much, throw a couple of them in your bag. Trust me, you'll see some kids and they'll be very, very happy to receive them and there's A few different ways that you can go about if you're going to Jamaica and it doesn't really take too much extra energy to make happen.
MarkYou're back, D?
SpeakerD. Yes, I am. Good, man. How are you doing, buddy? How's the trip started so far?
BubblemanWell, you know what? I've been up since... Five in the morning, and it's like, I don't even know what time it is now. It's like six o'clock in Toronto here, which means I guess it's only really three o'clock back in Vancouver. That's sweet. It feels a lot later, man. I feel like it's nighttime, so I'm definitely going to, oh, I don't even know. How long have we done Hash Church so far for?
BubblemanHave we gotten a couple hours already in?
SpeakerLet's see here. I don't even know.
BubblemanI can't keep up with it.
SpeakerYeah, I don't know, man, but I know you can pull it off. I know you can pull it off, so. What'd you say?
BubblemanI said, what fucking good are you if you don't know, man? What the fuck?
SpeakerFuck, you're lucky I'm not over there, buddy. I'd bong rip the hell out of you right now.
BubblemanYou'll do it when I get back. I have faith in you.
SpeakerOh, man, I made some real nice rosin here while I was waiting.
BubblemanI like the fridge. Is that new?
SpeakerNo potting for a while. I'll show you what I made last night. This is what I made last night. Don't tell. Don't tell, guys.
BubblemanAre you sure your dog didn't make that? Yeah! Well, that's nice. Now you see the shimmer. I bet it's kind of golden, too, hey?
SpeakerMore than black? Once I spread it out, it's just... Once I spread it out, it looks like this. Where's that little piece I just had there? I think your pocket. Nope, nope, not it. Noodles. Noodles. Noodles, yeah, there's noodles. You know who noodles is. You see, he was trying to give me that name a long time ago. Oh, you carried that name. And he fucking got it himself.
SpeakerHere we go. This is what I made when I took a little quick break.
MarkDude, I think there's still butane in that, man. You need to purge that for a couple more hours.
SpeakerLike I said, you're lucky I'm not over there, buddy.
BubblemanI think people say shit like that, and I'm like, can you not fucking read it? Like, it's, look at what the title is.
SpeakerSolvent, and then capital letters we gotta put on the background, but for the stupid ones, I guess. Solvent-less, right? Like, you know what it is, like, I don't mind some of that other stuff, I've tried it, but solvent-less? How do you beat it? Honestly.
BubblemanWell, I'm telling you, I feel you. The solventless quiver is my quiver. That dry sift, that bubble hash, and that rosin, that's the best of three worlds right there.
SpeakerWell, then you add some of them Tony Terps in there, some of Tony's Terps, and then what?
BubblemanThen you're like multi-dimensional modulation. Then you go seven stars.
MarkYou go full Kundalini, seven star, the full awakening.
MarkI know the Bizarre Brothers don't want to hear it, but they know what I'm talking about. There is a seven star. It has nothing to do with the melt. It has to do with the full awakening. Full Kundalini. Absolutely. I want it.
BubblemanI want it. 555 viewers for any of you Kabbalah folks out there. 555, of course.
BubblemanPeople are Googling that right now. Kabbalah, what the fuck is that?
MarkKundalini. Clearly more Jewish. This, uh... I've got some Gorilla Glue here. This stuff's ridiculous.
BubblemanI can't believe how many rips I've got out of this pen with just, like, one little dab of that rosin. That's got to be, like, 20 rips.
SpeakerWell, I guess I'll do a little... I'll do a rip off of this.
BubblemanRip it. It's a nice, chill church. You know, the next church is going to be in Jamaica.
SpeakerI'll just do it off the nug.
BubblemanSounds good. I think I've only ever done one hash church in Jamaica, and that was with you, Tony, at the Beachcomber house there.
MarkThe side of that building.
BubblemanYeah, at the back of that building. Didn't it feel like we were in New Orleans?
MarkYeah, I'm telling you. It's the same kind. It's pre-New Orleans vibe.
BubblemanYeah, like the whole building and the way it was built and even the paint and how it was aged. This was trippy.
MarkThe reason why you felt that way is because we were sitting on an old piece of beech wood that was dried out and somehow nailed against the wall. And then there was something else that was like a little stool, like another piece of wood, and then like a rod from like a tractor spoke. And there was some other stuff that was like semi-supporting this area, and it was like, yeah, that's the one spot you have to go on the internet there.
MarkAnd I'm like, right there? And they're like, right there? I'm like, okay. And I sat down, and it was like, we had to like stay in this one spot. And everything was balancing on like little lunch pickets. Remember that? Oh, yeah.
BubblemanLike it was like... Because we're like literally balancing, and it was the only place the computers worked in the whole place.
MarkYeah, in that spot. And there was like this weird hammered on like makeshift sitting because somebody like must have got into that position with their phone and they're like, can you hear me now? Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now? And like they, you can hear me now perfectly? Right here? And it was this movement and then they're like must have self-hammered the wood and put all the objects together so that they could sit there.
MarkAnd then that person got up and like finished the job and that's like how, that's the spot.
BubblemanYeah, that was the spot, dude, and it was like 8 feet by 6 feet or something. Like, that was the smallest little internet patch I've ever found.
MarkIt was like a whole zone layer or something.
ToddShit was insane.
BubblemanYeah, I will try to bump into some friends in Negril, maybe go see some grower buddies up in Orange Hill, or do something where I can have some special guests for Hash Church next week, because I think that would just be good fun.
MarkDo you have any potential ideas for your guests?
BubblemanI mean, I always want to have, I want to have kiddos, but that'll probably be like, listen, I'm there for three Sundays, so I think, or two, at least two, so I'll have one probably during or right before the cup, and one, you know, quite a, you know, a couple of weeks or a week before the cup, so.
BubblemanI'm not too sure, Joshua Mikado, what episode number it was that Tony and I did Jamaica, but if you punch in hashchurch Jamaica, I'm certain that it will come up in YouTube as the one. You won't need to know the number.
MarkYeah, you'll see it. It's on the side of like a blue building with a white picket wood balcony. Yes.
BubblemanSo did you hear that there's going to be a wedding at the Cannabis Cup?
MarkNow, who's getting married?
BubblemanWell, I don't know if I'm supposed to say. That's why I didn't mention it. But it's a well-known person in the community, for sure, for like 25 to 30 plus years. And they, yeah, they told me that, yeah, I'm coming out. I'm going to get married. I'm like, wow, that's great, dude. I'm celebrating my 20th wedding anniversary that I was married in Jamaica. So my wife brought her dress that she was married in, and I brought my shirt.
BubblemanI have this white Hailey Selassie shirt that says, Christ is in his kingly character. That was the shirt I was married in. And I brought it, and we're going to go do a little photo shoot like 20 years later on the beach. And I'm going to pick her up and give her a big kiss, and it's going to be awesome.
Mark20 years.
BubblemanWell, we've been together 26 years, but we were together for six years before we got married. So we're celebrating 20 years of marriage, but 26 years of friendship, relationship.
MarkYou know, there's a lot of people out there that watches this show that aren't even 26 themselves. You know?
BubblemanYeah, I guess that's probably very true. That made me feel old there for a second. Thank you.
MarkWell, the fact that you've been doing this 20 years and she's been by your side through it all. Yeah, I've been by her side. And you've been by her side, yeah.
BubblemanAbsolutely. Yeah, it's pretty incredible. She's in the other room right now. We have two hotel rooms here. One's joined to us, and she's in there with the three kids. I can hear my kid like, and she's of course like, oh, you go do your hash church, you know, get that hash church done. I'm like, thanks, sweetie. You're the best. You're the best. Yep, Harvey Birdman says, Tony's on it.
BubblemanI'm 25.
SpeakerI hear that from my spouse all the time. Go ahead. Get your hash church thing done. Go do your hash church thing. Go.
MarkBye.
SpeakerI'm not going to spend three or four hours. Goodbye. Go do your hash church thing.
BubblemanThat's awesome. Well, all the ages are coming up now. So here's the ages in chat. We've got 29, 24, 35, 27, 19, 23, 21, 38, 85. I don't believe it. I wish, but I don't believe it. Only 21, 25, 45.
Bubbleman72? No, 1972. Oh, so we got like between 20 and 50 year olds mostly in the room. Which LED light would I recommend, B-Man, and why? I'd rather have Brad Higgins come in and talk about the LED lights. I don't know if he's around today, but we can give him a quick little boot and scooty. Easy to do that. He's got the knowledge when it comes to... And I really...
BubblemanI only have two of them, so it's somewhat limited. I have the Lush XXL, the Dominator, and I have the, what's the other one that I have? It's the Light King, the Spectrum King. I liked that one, I have to say. I think that one was really good. How did I meet my wife, Prophet Marcus asks. Okay, well here's a good story. I should tell this story because I can tell this story, and it happened about 26 years ago.
BubblemanI was a strapping young lad with my skateboarder pals, and we thought that we were going to go over, okay, in Winnipeg. You like that, Darren?
BubblemanI wish I could have heard you laugh because it looked like it was a pretty good one. But anyway, I'm living in Winnipeg. I'm 16 years old, and I'm hanging out with my skateboarder buddies, and we are not allowed at bars, and none of us really drink anyway. But we're all into skateboarding, and we're like, well, there's this place. In Transcona, in Winnipeg, called Flipside. And the Flipside is a bar for kids.
BubblemanIf you're 13 to 17 years old, you can go to Flipside. They don't sell drinks, but it's dancing, and it's the bar atmosphere, so you get the vibe. It's Winnipeg, right? They're training us to be alcoholics. So we, I end up at this place, and there's a rail and a couple of curbs and some things set up behind Flipside that skaters just from the neighborhood, Corbett, I can't even remember a couple of the other names.
BubblemanGreat, great people. You know, just all we were doing was skating and having a blast and high, smoking weed. And so I saw these two girls that I knew, which were Char's friends, and they're both, you know, beautiful girls. One was named Ryan and one was named Rochelle. And so me and my buddy knew these two girls and we bumped into them at this restaurant by the flip side.
BubblemanAnd then they were like, oh, we're going to go meet our friend Charlene. So I went with them. And we went to Flipside. I skated. I never met their friend, Charlene. But after that, at the end of the night, one of them grabbed me and said, oh, we want to come with you because I had a car. So I was with my buddy, Steve. He was on my hockey team, and he was a dude that I skated with a lot back in the day.
BubblemanAnd this girl, Rochelle, brought this girl, Charlene, and she sat in the back seat. And I could see her in my rearview mirror the whole night. It was funny because what we were doing was we were looking for weed. That's why we were leaving. We were like, we need to go get more weed. So the day that my wife met me, she came with me to look for weed.
BubblemanNo foreshadowing there. You can't even make that shit up. And that is the truth. That is how I met my wife. And 26 years later, couldn't be happier. Couldn't be happier. Yes, Kyle Cushman is getting married. Someone else brought it out. Now I can say it because someone else said it in the chat room. Congratulations, Kyle. We'll look forward to your wedding. It's going to be exciting.
BubblemanNo, Jay, my missus is not a car whore. She's quite a lovely lady who deserves respect.
Mark26 years of devoted commitment and children.
SpeakerYes.
MarkSince the moment you met in the car at 16.
BubblemanThis guy clearly doesn't listen to Snoop Dogg, who clearly has told us from a very long time ago that you can't make a hoe a housewife.
ToddNope. So come on, man.
SpeakerYou called your wife a hoe, buddy. Which one? I'll go dive them up.
BubblemanYeah, you go dab them up all right. I'll send my buddy Orbital Lobe down to see ya.
SpeakerYeah. I'm starting to wonder if Garen's torture chamber, like, instead of, like, grabbing people by the head and bashing them in a table, it's like he puts them up to rigs and it's like, now dab this with your eye.
MarkYou know what? Yeah, I know. I feel like he does, like, um. Like, you would be really scared to have Darren 420 show up at your house with his crew and tools and his whole, he comes in and he forces you to do crazy stuff. I'd be terrified. I'd be like, shit, I'm going to be dad to Darren 420. I better get out the frigging gloves, you know, and get out the neck brace and be prepared, you know, do a little bit of this.
SpeakerStart gobbling CBD, you're going to panic.
MarkYeah, you have no idea. He can like put your arm in a vice, put your other arm in a vice over here and be like running cold vapor on your chest and be like, all right, now take this sativa, dry sip, 73, half a gram right now, all of it, go. You know?
BubblemanDude, I have to say, you know what? D is more than reasonable to me. The person that is the destroyer, and I bet you D even admits it too. Is Roshan.
SpeakerOh, fuck, man. That guy will destroy anybody on the dabs. Well, you know what? Except for Mountain Mountain. Including himself. Oh, man. I've never seen a guy do like three-quarter ground dabs. Minimal. Minimal.
BubblemanThey're like, listen, it's kind of like this. This is like he would give that to me as a dab.
SpeakerYeah, and then look, you go what? You go what?
BubblemanI'll tell you, the last time we were together, the last time we were at Whistler at the Four Seasons Hotel and he had these just beautiful pipes. He had this Klein recycler that was three and a half inches tall. It was like the smallest Klein that Quave ever made or whatever. And then he had these other mothership things. But we each took one dab and it was the cookies, that cookie rosin.
BubblemanI think it was even cookies dry sift rosin. So he took the Girl Scout cookies, he Made rosin with the dry sift from that. Dude, we both got so high. It was literally like I had to get out of the room right away. I was like, dude, I can't be in this room anymore. Let's just go to the pool. And he was just like, what? The pool?
BubblemanOkay. We walked down there looking like zombies. Like literally, I even said to him at one point, I said, you know, nobody knows how fried we are right now. Like we're walking down, we look totally normal, but to us it's like that meme where they're like, when you get really high and your friends start, and you feel your friends know you're too high and the dude sitting on the chair is like an alien or whatever.
BubblemanYou know, we've all seen the meme.
SpeakerOr when the guys are bringing the food up for room service at our sessions there, they're just like, what the fuck? We got trays of food, trays and trays and trays of food. Holy shit. I missed that. You've got to do that. Two weeks.
BubblemanWhen you puff good, you've got to eat good. It's hard for me right now to be in Toronto and not be at my favorite restaurant, which is Sursa Lee's. If you're ever in Toronto, it's just called Lee's, L-E-E, and I'm telling you, man, this place is on point.
SpeakerWhat's it serve?
BubblemanWhat he's most famous for, he serves everything, but what he's most famous for is his 19-ingredient coleslaw that shows up. It's about 10 inches tall on the plate, and they come and they mix it all up in front of you. It's just so ridiculous that even if you dislike vegetables, you will love this coleslaw. But then every meal is like a tapas, so it's like three, maybe four bites, and they're super high-end, like crazy delicious.
BubblemanCarameled onions on cod. What's that?
MarkDid I eat that with you?
BubblemanYeah, we went there totally, dude. We feasted. Are you kidding me, dude?
MarkWhen you started talking about the coleslaw, I'm like, no way, dude. That's only one other place I've ever eaten like that before. And then I was thinking, oh yeah, that was with you at this place.
BubblemanYep, totally. We went there. I would go there every day if I could.
MarkThat place was awesome. So good. Every dish, in fact, was so good. I ate there until I hurt. I felt like I actually pushed something in my intestines out my rib. It was like a moment of like your rib kind of cracks, like gives you out. Like, you're just like, ooh. That's not good.
BubblemanThat's worse than having to open your top button. That's like, damn, I just popped a rib. I better...
MarkFractured. Hairline fractured a rib into your hairline. It just brings it away. You're like,
MarkBut yeah, I remember that place. That coleslaw was ridiculous. And you know what? It was so much coleslaw that even though when you were done eating it, everyone ate it and it was gone. And you're like, I can eat a whole other one of those things.
BubblemanOh, I know.
MarkIt was so good.
BubblemanDude, I'm telling you. Delicious. I'm in Toronto right now. I can't believe it. I could literally get in a cab and I could go eat there right now.
MarkCome on, go do it.
BubblemanI know, I should, but I got a whole family behind me right now.
MarkYou guys should all eat that coleslaw. Dude, I'm telling you, we should. You should go like, hey, good news, guys. We're going for coleslaw.
BubblemanThe best coleslaw in the world. I think his other restaurants are in like New York and L.A. or something.
MarkYeah, they are.
BubblemanIndonesian guy, Sir Salih.
MarkHe's really good. So let me ask you something on the first hour of Hash Church.
SpeakerYeah.
MarkDid you talk about parchment paper or contamination of parchment paper or anything like that yet?
BubblemanNo, we have not talked about any of the contamination. I'll tell you one thing, and I got ridiculed for it because someone was like, oh, Bubble Man makes his decisions based on his spider sense. Because I was just saying, look, it's not my spider sense. I used parchment. I didn't think anything was wrong with it. And then I noticed it stopped being nonstick. And then I researched it.
BubblemanAnd then first of all, I found out the way parchment is made is bad. It's not good. It's like nasty chemicals, and they press these fibers all together, and it's bad. But the worst part to me was that there was a coating, silicon or kilon, That was coming off. And to me, it doesn't take spider sense to know that when that fucking parchment is starting to get saturated the way it never was before, because it had that coating on, that it just made me feel uneasy.
BubblemanI do this every day. These are important things to me, that if I do something every day and I just suddenly feel like, man, maybe that's, not only is it maybe not that good, it might be actually bad. So I just stopped using it. And I've used the paper, the two sheets of paper that you sent me a month or more ago, I have pressed all my rosin through.
BubblemanMost of my rosin sits on it. And I even cleaned one sheet and I'm bringing it to Jamaica.
MarkSo you like it?
BubblemanYeah, I like it, but I'd like still, I haven't seen any type of, it's the same as it always was. And the kind of way I knew it was sort of maybe the better idea was that When I started trying to collect off of it, I was like, fuck, this is way harder to collect off of because there's no membrane between the material and the parchment or whatever to sort of release, you know, to let it come off.
BubblemanIt's not there. So on that stuff, it's really like it doesn't clean as easy as parchment and sometimes the harder is the better and I'll give you an example. My friend Mikey in Jamaica, he's a cannabis grower and he always said to me that You know, if his plants don't have bugs, the fruit that he eats, the plants that he grows, he wants them to attract the bugs.
BubblemanIf it has no bugs, that means it's been grown with a chemical, they took a more difficult path, and he's going for the more easy path. So just like a metaphor or whatever, like, it's a little bit more difficult, that material you sent, and I kind of, I didn't like it at first, and then it was the thing I liked about it. It's, yeah, it's more difficult, because nothing's fucking coming off each time you You do this.
MarkSo, I mean, yeah, what do you do? What do I do? Yeah, do you lay that on like a cold plate?
BubblemanI mean, you just... Oh, when I collect it?
MarkYeah.
BubblemanI found, yeah, the best way is it's temperature specific, and it's not too cold, it's not too warm, and at one point, it reaches a point where you can kind of like... Like rub, clean it. Like you can kind of do this sort of process and it just all collects. Rather than the slow process of either taking like a glass stopper and just picking it up like with a stamp.
BubblemanHey, it's easy, true. Are you in, where are you at right now? Amsterdam or Spain? I'd say Spain judging by the short sleeve t-shirt.
SpeakerYeah, yeah, I'm in Spain at the moment. Still out in Barcelona. Yeah. Loving it out here. A nice change from Cold Amsterdam after spending a couple of years there. It's good, it's good. The laws here are real good at the moment. The clubs are working well. There's a real good scene over here. There was an awesome event recently, a Hashmaster Challenge, where two extract artists had the same material and went head-to-head, and then everyone kind of went along, got two samples, and blind judged them.
SpeakerSo hopefully there's going to be a ROS in one soon, because I hear there's some D now presses arriving in... Thank you so much for joining us.
BubblemanThat's the way to do it. I always said it.
MarkThat's the way to do it.
BubblemanI always said it. I mentioned, you know, bring material like even dry sift, for instance, and then get someone like Skunk Man Sam to, like, clean it. So it's just all evenly cleaned, and then it's a true competition to see which one of these people grew the best resin. Because they grew it, they decontaminated it farmer grade, and then they all get even... Playing field with the level of cleaning or decontamination that is furthered towards the product.
BubblemanThat would be, in my mind, the ultimate fucking grow cup. It's like, all right, we're going to check out how well you grow resin. And even further, it would be crazy as everyone was growing a similar strain. That would be just nuts. You know, you have the haze cup or whatever. Get everyone to grow some hazers and Sift that haze and then have him or myself or both of us for that.
BubblemanWhy the hell not? I'd love to do that with Skunk Man Sam. Good fun.
BubblemanWe shouldn't be subjected to this clean rosin when it's contaminated from silicon. I just worry, you know, guys, this is what I worry about. People aren't just doing this for their own personal benefit. They're doing it as a business. Some people have already openly bragged that they've done thousands of rosin runs for the medicinal market. So all I'm saying is wouldn't you feel sick if you realized, oh no, I was concentrating something that really wasn't necessary.
BubblemanInto my final product. And so I've always worried about that in anything you do. Because like I said, I do it a lot. I do it often, daily, multiple times daily. I don't want to concentrate the bad. I just want to concentrate the good. That's the trick.
SpeakerWhat can we use that has no contaminant? Is there something on the market being tested or played with? Mark or Tony?
BubblemanWell, nothing that's going to be shared at this point, but when we know that it's safe to share and that it's not just passing you on something that's even worse than parchment, because that's not doing anyone a favor, then that will be told. And I don't suspect that'll be very long. I was kind of hoping that the Harborside lab would be able to test some of the reasons that were being made.
BubblemanYou know, test the material, test the rosin.
SpeakerIn all fairness, in all fairness, we're making some parchment paper. The parchment paper was never ever designed to do this. Yeah, I'm not blaming parchment paper. This was designed to basically used for non-stick food applications where again sometimes you're heating up the food but not in many cases are you actually having anything that could be a solvent that could make this silicone coating bloom and basically just be problematic in getting Thank you for watching.
SpeakerAgain, until I think the studies are done, no manufacturer is going to put that claim on a parchment paper or baking paper because they are then liable to any lawsuit that would happen. I mean, they would basically have to do the tests to show that their product holds up under these conditions. And I can tell you, none of those companies are doing any of those tests. It's similar to the pesticide issue.
SpeakerThe pesticide manufacturers are told now by the EPA that if they want to sell this thing into the cannabis market that they have to do all the studies and register. Well, that's like millions of dollars and years away from happening. So just like with parchment paper, I don't think that you're really going to see a paper developed for this industry. For that purpose, unless there's a company that's willing to accept the liability and essentially carry out the studies that need to be done in order to be able to show that the material is totally safe.
SpeakerSo to answer your question, Derek, there is no completely safe inert material. Teflon is pretty inert, but it does have some leachables that you may want to be concerned about. The only thing I would say is that if you use parchment paper, just use it once. It's only meant to be used once, and if you're using it several times, I think you could certainly have a lot more issues than if you're just using it once and throwing it away.
BubblemanWhich brings us to Mr. Hideous' comment, sustainable options are best. Let's move away from all this disposable stuff. I mean, Tony sent me two sheets of that stuff, and I You know, well over an ounce of rosin into it, and many different buds and pieces of hash, and it's just the same pieces. They look the same, they're good, they're clean. It's a pretty good product. I would like to see it tested to know for sure that...
BubblemanYou know, or even contact the company and say, hey, this is what we're doing.
SpeakerYeah, well, like turkey bags, these things were never designed for this, you know, end use and purpose. So, I'm sure the manufacturers are loving the sales. And again, like the turkey bag economy, maybe don't understand exactly why they're seeing the sales. Hair straighteners and t-shirt presses.
BubblemanBlew up in Vancouver in the 90s when everyone realized you could cover this much.
MarkI walked in a bed bath in Beyond the other day. You can get micro planers in the three sizes you need, the sieve screens. You can get oil slick pads for 20 bucks in any size you want, heat rated spatulas. They've got every single thing, scales. I thought I saw a set of bubble bags there. I'm not even kidding you. It was like literally like you walk into Bed Bath & Beyond and it was all out in the open in the front and everything.
MarkIt was like, man, there's just like everything here. Acrylic, this, like they had everything just out in the open. That's awesome. You're like, man, these guys, they're on the trends. What they're doing is they're trending things and then they're investing their inventory in the trends.
SpeakerWell, I mean, they're a free market enterprise that's following the sales numbers, and when they see sales increase and they see units and SKUs move from the floor, that, you know, gives, again, these automated programs all these kinds of indications that, ooh, these products are being sold, let's, you know, put them in more, you know, in better locations within the stores so they can be seen. Absolutely.
SpeakerI mean, it's all about making more money.
BubblemanAbsolutely.
MarkSo when you see like three competitor micro planers pitching a different thing as well, so it's like I'm thinking to myself, I'm like, wow, are people really pushing out this much cheese? This much artichoke cheese is going on? There's a wall. A wide size, big size, small size, every kind of frigging cheese grater you can imagine. I remember my grandmother. She made the best meals and my mom makes the best.
MarkThere's one grater. You just take parmesan cheese and you grate it. And that's how mozzarella looks. That's how everything is. One. One grater of cheese.
BubblemanThey got breeders this big. They got breeders this big. They got the hand ones, the inverted ones.
MarkThree different competitor, what they call cooking mats, nonstick, exactly like the oil slick. I bought one for $20, size of the table.
BubblemanWhat do you guys think about the concept of the solvents? This is not the solvents, the terpenes, the solvents in the terpenes in that sense, that could they potentially be breaking down these cooking sheets, these oil slick pads like... I've heard mention of a few different ingredients that are present in some of these.
SpeakerThey don't break them down, Mark, because the materials like the oil slick pad is made out of is a really long polymer, but there's additives that are in the polymer to make it rubbery. There was a discussion on the Facebook page earlier in the week. What goes into a lot of these things to make them rubbery is phthalates. Phthalates belong to a class of compounds called plasticizers.
SpeakerWhat plasticizers do is they make plastics more flexible and more rubbery so they're not so brittle. A lot of these compounds are fat soluble and certainly hydrocarbon solvent Thanks for joining us. We'll see you next time.
SpeakerI think it's really problematic for all kinds of reasons. They think it's an endocrine disruptor, and they think it has all kinds of issues, but I can tell you that I don't think it'll decompose. I think it'll actually vaporize into melt, and I think that that's something certainly that you do not want to be pulling deep into your lungs. Now, the amount of plasticizer that is used is very, very small, but I would be worried that if you're using rubbers and materials that have Plasticizer in it, and now you're using that to make rosin where you're using pressure and temperature that certainly those things could start to leach out.
SpeakerSo I would definitely not use a mat like that in direct contact with something that's coming in heat with your rosin.
MarkYeah, that's a good clarification. Someone online on Instagram was asking that, and I said, yeah, you don't want to use the oil slick to press onto. You can just use the oil slick to protect your furniture with your rig. You know, like while you're dabbing and stuff. That's all you use it for. It's just like a mat. So you just don't have a mess. Put my pipe down.
MarkYeah, I couldn't believe people actually using the oil slick mats to actually press into.
BubblemanI've seen people pouring like solvents out of the unit like and into the back oven on them.
MarkNot good.
SpeakerNow, that's just a rule of thumb with plastic. If you could ever see, like, I know I used to tell people about this when I used to use Thank you for joining us today.
SpeakerThey create hot spots where, again, these plastics instantly melt and release all their contents. And, yeah, you don't want that in your hash for sure. Definitely not in your food. Definitely not in your hash. Mark, I got a crazy question for you on that staining issue. Just because it's an internal question, it's not important. Why does curry have the power to stain porcelain plates and permeate all objects that are supposed to be solid?
SpeakerYeah. Curcumin, right? Isn't it? Curcumin is that one ingredient that's really highly colored. If you wanted to give your chicken or whatever you're browning a really nice Indian flavor in that color, yeah, curcumin has got a really high extinction chromophore. It's very, very highly colored because it's extremely conjugated. And it's one of those compounds that, again, they think it's like a miracle compound. It's one of those nutraceutical kind of things that's in Indian food that they really believe is one of those things that is a radical oxygen scavenger.
SpeakerSo it scavenges free radicals in the body and promotes health by just making sure that free radicals just aren't running rampant, making mutations within your DNA and your proteins. But Yeah, curcumin is the thing there that really is the highly colored material ratio. That stuff, again, is one of those compounds that is a super antioxidant too, so it fights disease. I know that there's been studies on it looking at whether or not it's actually an anti-tumor agent.
SpeakerI think it has some anti-tumor activity, but in general, it's a peripheral antioxidant. Is that ability to transfer? Because that's one of the, like I know it's curcumin and it's very powerful and I always like, whatever it has that makes it stain that, like nothing else that we, you know, typically consume in our food, it must be why it lasts in the body and why it's so medicinal but there's no connection, you know, scientifically but it's funny you should bring up all those other studies.
SpeakerAnd that staining, can someone use that as a test? Could we use procurement to see what happens with parchment and these other subjects if they stain? Then they are, like, could that be a litmus test for safety? Yeah, I think what you're concerned about with parchment is that the coating, which is, okay, so the coating itself, let's talk about the coating process. So when parchment is actually made and it's coated, it's actually rolled through this bath that basically has the monomer in it, and it's a, for the most part, I think the coating that's used the most is the Wacker Chemie Thank you for joining us.
SpeakerSee, a lot of people don't understand this. It's actually an organic polymer that contains silicon. So it's not a polysilicate. So it's not like glass or like a silicon polymer or like a silicon wafer like you would think would be brittle. This is actually a very flexible polymer, and it's a polymer that could be either initiated with light or heat. So what they do is after they draw the paper through these things, The paper basically, the polymer sort of coagulates on there and then it's sort of cured in a heat and light process.
SpeakerWhat happens after that is they just basically make sure that there's basically none of the monomer, none of the material left behind. I think they do very, very minimal testing to find out whether or not it'll hold up under heat plus solvent. They do know, again, that it's basically a heat cured material that through one cycle in the oven We've got a couple of questions here. One of the questions is, what is the best way to get rid of cellulose?
SpeakerWhat is the best way to get rid of cellulose? Dr. Well, the best way to get rid of cellulose is to get rid of the cellulose from your body. The cellulose from your body can be safe for coming in contact with food.
SpeakerThank you so much for joining us.
SpeakerThe coating itself absorbs the terpene and absorbs the solvent just because it's coming in contact with it because it's basically what's called fixed law of diffusion because you have no terpene in the polymer layer, but there's a lot of terpene up here, so it's just naturally going to want to migrate into the polymer surface, especially if the polymer is heated and especially if the polymer is in a somewhat molten state at that point.
SpeakerBut most of the stuff is bound to the paper surface, and unless you see, again, a physical deformation of the paper, you're probably okay with one-time use. But I would never, ever use it again twice.
SpeakerMy own advice. I think that's good advice.
BubblemanThat's solid. Hey, welcome back, Todd. Puffin' on your doobie.
ToddThat is interesting. You know, the silicone mats we use definitely stain pretty easily with very terpene-rich oils, and there's no way they're not picking it up. There's no way it's not frosting.
SpeakerTodd, that gives you a clue that if the terpenes are getting in, the stuff is getting out. So there's an exchange there that's happening. That tells you that clue. Also, I don't know if you've ever seen, if you ever have, like, A BHO or a hash in a small little piece of parchment, and the parchment either gets brittle or it just doesn't look right. It doesn't look the same.
SpeakerYou can tell that the contact of that hash with that parchment paper has changed the property of the paper.
SpeakerInteresting.
BubblemanWell, it's good to discuss and figure it out. People are definitely enjoying the conversation in the chat room. A lot of people have been like, man, I've been waiting for this conversation for a while. And one guy was like, how does he know so much about parchment paper?
SpeakerSo I worked at a company that makes coatings, that made coatings that went on papers and cardboards and plastics, and I've been a coatings chemist for almost about 15 of my 20 professional years, so I know a little bit about coatings.
BubblemanIt wouldn't be a giant leap to say that probably it's not ideal to burn and inhale these coatings in any real amounts at all.
SpeakerNo, absolutely. But I think that you certainly want to minimize any non-cannabis thing that you're inhaling. I think that the other thing is that, again, these companies who are using parchment to actually make product that's going out in the market, They ought to be testing that product for any residual polymer just like any business in Colorado would have to test a BHO for residual solvent, right? I mean, there should be the same kind of thing.
SpeakerThey should make sure that there is no exogenous material that's induced through the process.
BubblemanAwesome. Well, thank you for that. Much appreciated to hear all of that, actually. All right. Tony's taken off. It's about time I said something useful. It's good to say useful things. People are appreciating it. I'm almost at the point where I don't know if, I guess I ate a little bit earlier. That's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying right there. Take us out with a song, bro.
BubblemanWe've done at least two hours. Come on. It's loud. It's dark now. I'm fucking hungry.
SpeakerI know. It's dinner time, right? What do our spouses say around now, Mark?
BubblemanIsn't church over yet? Well, what she said two minutes ago was, you done?
BubblemanAlright guys, thank you for watching Hash Church. Mark's going to play us out. Much appreciated to show up on the lateness of the day. I guess it was easier than showing up super early. But yeah, play us out man, play us out.
SpeakerAlright, so here's a song I wrote while I was in Oregon a couple weeks ago. This is called The Hash Blues. Does anyone have The Hash Blues out there? You have the hash blues when you don't have hash.
BubblemanThis goes out to all of you people out there that don't have hash.
SpeakerYour hash is tasty, won't be lasting long. Your hash is tasty, won't be lasting long. I got the hash blues.
SpeakerEvery time you hear this song, my baby loves me, makes me feel all right. My baby loves me, makes me feel all right. I got the hash blues. But everything gonna be all right. My baby loves me, makes me feel all right. I got the hash blues, baby, when I'm out at night. I got the hash crew. Baby, I got the cash. My baby loves me. Nick's baby's all right.
SpeakerMy hash is tasty. Won't be gone tonight. I got the hash crew. Everything gonna be all right. My hash is tasty. Won't be lasting long. Your hash is tasty. Won't be lasting long. I got the hash cruise. Every time you hear this song. Thanks, Mark. We'll see you guys next week.
