BubblemanHey everybody! Happy New Year! 2017 is here, January 1st. We are at high noon and we are here for episode 119 of Hash Church, so I hope everyone is doing wonderful today. I am just going to mute my YouTube stream as it starts up and I will send out the invitations to the Hash Church panelists and we'll hear what everyone did for their New Year's Eve and how they brought that in.
BubblemanShut that down and here we go. We're going to send out the links. Send out the links. Okay, here we go. Well, starting Hash Church a little later today, as some of you may have noticed, I did have quite a few calls from people worried that Hash Church wasn't going to happen today after especially the nine o'clock time came and went. But I was talking to Todd McCormick and Rob Clark the other day, and they suggested maybe on behalf of Tony that we start a little bit later today.
BubblemanSo thank you for that, Tony and Todd and Rob. And welcome, ATN. Welcome, John Burfellow. Welcome, guys. Happy, happy new year. Indra's in the house. Oh, you got the candle? You got the candle? Hey, don't you go burning down that hotel, Etienne.
AtnAw, but it's Christmas.
BubblemanDude, listen, I damn near pissed myself when I saw that person did that photo of you in the Hash Church group with the little lighter fluid and the light.
AtnOh, dude, that had me absolutely howling. That was some of the funniest shit I've seen in a while. Whoever did that, thank you.
BubblemanDid you send that to your sister? You gotta send that to your sister.
AtnYeah, yeah, okay, of course, of course. Happy New Year, everybody. Behind me right now.
BubblemanOh, rainbow. I see. I see a little bit of the purple on the bottom there.
AtnYeah.
BubblemanHey, welcome Skunk Man Sam. Happy New Year.
Skunk ManHowdy, howdy, howdy.
BubblemanDude, you've been in the new year for a long time, haven't you?
Skunk ManIt's already an old year for me.
BubblemanNice. Welcome Indra. Oh, you're on mute for some reason. Your mic's not coming through. But welcome John Lennon as well in the background. And welcome some big old bottles of Everclear and some blue cups and all the good things that John has brought with him today. But for some reason, if your mic is not working, sometimes what I have to do is I have to shut my, I have to shut the whole thing down and start it over again, like the browser at least.
BubblemanBut we hope that you get that working because, of course, I know there's a whole schwack of people in the chat room that want to hear From you, Mr. Indra. All right. Wow, we already got almost 500 people. People were anxious. There was a lot of people hitting me up today saying, hey, what's going on? Is Hash Church happening? Are we getting together? Are we doing this?
BubblemanWhat's the problem? So, no problem. We're here.
BubblemanWhat's that, Etienne? You cut out a bit.
AtnSorry. That's okay. We need to burn some evidence toward the Vatican.
Skunk ManHey, Etienne, when was the last time you cleaned your bong?
AtnWell, I'm traveling right now, so this one's a little dirty traveler, so yeah.
BubblemanCalls him out. Skunk Man Sam's just like, ah, it's a new year. Let's see who I can call out on Hash Church. We love you, Sam. You want to see my bong?
Skunk ManWell, that's pretty darn clean. I'd be ashamed to show you mine because yours is birdier.
BubblemanDude, I've been religiously clean. I've even offended people who watch my YouTube videos and they're like, dude, you're cool and all bubble man, but what the fuck? How can you possibly clean your pipe that often? That is completely ridiculous. And I will say something that one of my mentors said to me years ago. Cleanliness is next to godliness. And it's funny because I'm pretty sure the fucking guy's an atheist, but... Yeah, I absolutely am.
Skunk ManI think what I actually said was cleanliness is next to stoneliness.
BubblemanYeah, that was the first. That was the first, actually. This goes back into like the early 2000s that I first heard you say that. You were throwing away your screens. You were like hitting one screen and then tossing it away at a...
AtnI was like, what's up with all the, why are you doing that?
BubblemanWell, cleanliness is next to stoneliness. And I think I will join Etienne for a little. And when I say a little, I do mean a little. Welcome there, Chimera. Happy New Year to you.
Ryan Dank AfHappy New Year, Churgers.
BubblemanAnd a huge happy Facebook birthday to Chimera, not on his birthday.
Ryan Dank AfYeah. I admit it, I lied to the corporation when I signed up for Facebook.
BubblemanWell, you know what I said.
Ryan Dank AfEveryone's sending me Facebook, thank you, happy birthdays, thank you, but I lied, sorry.
BubblemanIt's pretty funny, I saw like so many people, I was like, oh shit. First I thought, it's not Chimera's birthday, and then I just was like, it's Chimera's birthday. Facebook told me it was Chimera's birthday. I've known the guy for 20 years, I'm pretty sure his birthday's in March like mine, but okay, today's his birthday, January 1st.
Skunk ManGive that information to Facebook. They sell it to the capitalist cake mongers.
BubblemanYes, exactly. Yes, that's how it goes right there.
Ryan Dank AfDid you guys see that somebody changed the Hollywood sign overnight?
SpeakerVery cool.
BubblemanVery cool. That's a 40-year anniversary from the last time that was done in California, 1976, January 1st. They called it vandalism. I said, come on. It's not vandalism. The guy put up sheets. Yeah, it happened in 1976. That was the first time they did Holly Weed. Now, is 1976 just before Just Say No with Nancy Reagan, or was that after? That's before. Right, so she was a decade later.
BubblemanYeah, so fucking beautiful, wonderful. California, as always, leading by example.
AtnSaid it was also done in 83.
BubblemanIn 83, I never heard that, but I believe it. I mean, it seems like something that should be done once a year, personally, but...
AtnThey take that sign very seriously.
Ryan Dank AfThank you for watching.
BubblemanLike a great sign that my friend used to have on his grow. It said, give weed an inch and it'll take the whole yard.
Skunk ManDo you think it'll be better than tulips did in the 1700s in Holland?
BubblemanWell, I mean, fuck, maybe. That's a tough one, though, because that was an explosion. But that also had to do with a royal person loving those flowers. Wasn't it a queen or something that was obsessed with tulips?
Skunk ManIt also had to do with the rarity. And the trouble is there got to be more and more and more until finally people were paying the equivalent of a million dollars for one, which the next day was practically worthless.
BubblemanYeah, the big flower crash. The bubble popped. The bubble popped. Well, you know what? Those clear domes, they never stay clear for long, do they, Sam?
Skunk ManWell, you know what they say? If it don't bubble, it ain't worth the trouble.
BubblemanHey, and that's really how I got to meet Sam. For those of you wondering, I had been introduced to him, but he was kind of like a hard fucking egg to crack. And even getting introduced by my friend Hillary, who I thought, Hillary, this is a great introduction. He still was like, fuck, I was definitely not his friend after I met him the first time. But when I used his...
BubblemanQuote, which is the, if it don't bubble, it ain't worth the trouble, which I first heard Rob say in 95 when I smoked the 50, which was their dry sip, this crazy dry sip, very strong, like minimum 50% THC. They called it the 50. Marty called it the Chiroc. It was crazy shit for sure. First time I'd ever seen that stuff. But when he hit it, It was like, see that?
BubblemanIf it don't bubble, it ain't worth the trouble. And it was basically, it was melting through the tightest little screen down the stem of the roor. And I was just, it was 95. And I was like, what the fuck? So four years later in 99, when I start the bubble company, bubble bag company, and I can't get his hash out of my mind, I think what a great logo.
BubblemanIf it don't bubble, it ain't worth the trouble. And it was Sam emailed me based on that, and he said, You know, do you know who said that? Do you know whose quote that is? And I was like, dude, I know who you are. I know it's your quote. I'll stop using it if you want me to. I'll keep using it if you want me to. I'm good to go with whatever you want me to do.
BubblemanAnd that's kind of how Sam and I linked up and became friends.
Skunk ManRemember, we did make a deal that you promised to give me half of anything that was good enough to bubble from then on.
BubblemanYeah, yeah, I mean, that was just one of my many huge lies that I've told to many people in the community as I stepped over their lifeless corpses to gain attraction for myself. You know, come on, Sam.
BubblemanThat was sarcastic for those of you watching that don't know. I don't want you to think that that's what I do. I may stand on the shoulders of giants, but I have always, always, always given respect where respect is due, and no one can say that I haven't. So bubble up. I'm going to put my mic on mute, so if you don't mind, someone, please talk.
AtnThat was a nice little bubbler you got there. I have a little frosted one.
Skunk ManI want to vote for a revolution. Now that we've got him off the air for a minute, I say we elect a new pope.
AtnYou.
BubblemanHey, careful now. I still have admin responsibilities here. I can block your ass out there, man.
Skunk ManWait a minute. I thought you had not only your mic, but your speaker off. You mean you were listening to all that?
BubblemanOh, I heard every word of it, Sam. Every word. This is how we're going to start the new year. This is how it's going to happen.
AtnSo somebody was asking last week why I was exhaling and I couldn't see my smoke. This thing's called a smoke buddy. If you haven't seen them, I recommend them especially for hotel stays or staying wherever you are. It's a filter that you pour into and nothing comes out. So it's a carbon filter. You can see here it's kind of clear and filters around. Definitely perfect for areas where you need to be quiet with your smoke.
BubblemanThey work like a charm. Where's Todd?
AtnProbably celebrating the new year.
Skunk ManNo, the only reason I asked was because I was talking with him, I don't know, maybe 8 or 12 hours ago, and Rob was there at Todd's house.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, they're probably doing breakfast. Yeah, Rep's been in.
BubblemanThey were the ones that asked me to do Hash Church later so they could be in on time.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, those smoke scrubbers, ATN, are pretty cool. I was trying to get those into a hospital group down on the east coast of Canada. Some of the nurses were starting to complain. I don't know if it was the nurses were complaining or it was the HR people were complaining about people using, they were vaporizing in the room and they were concerned that The attendees in the hospital, the workers, were going to get exposed to cannabis secondhand.
Skunk ManAnd so, I don't know, I suggested those, but... To kill the stink, we used to get a paper roll cardboard tube from the middle of it and fill it up with a Febreze, one of those scented things that you put... In the washing machine and then blow the smoke through it when we exhaled. It got rid of it pretty darn good.
BubblemanI'll tell you, careful with that shit though because I'll never forget a friend showing me this bud. He's like, hey, I got this bud. I'm supposed to make oil out of it but there's something weird going on with it. I smell it and I'm like, oh my God, it smells like bounce. And we track it back through to the guy and he says, well, I do use bounce sheets in my exhaust of my drying room.
BubblemanAnd I'm like, listen, you have contaminated all of your bud. I don't know what's going on with these bounce molecules, but they are fucking evaporating off that sheet. Even in air, being constantly pulled out, it contaminated his whole...
Skunk ManIt's not a problem when you're exhaling your hit.
BubblemanNo, but it reminded me of this story of I'd never had to tell a guy like literally you have to throw your crop away. It's like there's no, my friend tried to make oil with it even after I told him not to and it was like, it was like as though he had 50 bounce sheets in the small batch.
Skunk ManWe should have given it to Indra. If he can get rid of cat piss, he can get rid of mouse piss I remember. Right?
BubblemanAll right, shit, I heated my banger and then didn't hit it. Time to heat it up again.
SpeakerTime to go again. So that's a waste, I mean, come on.
Ryan Dank AfSo did, I don't know if you guys saw this news coming out of the Canadian system. There was an LP that had some pot recalled because it had pyrethrins on it. It was sprayed with a plant wash that had pyrethrins. I guess it wasn't, the product wasn't labeled as a pesticide. So they recalled the batch and they pulled it back in and tested it. It turned out that there was Michael Butanil on some of these, in some of the products.
AtnYeah, I saw that.
Ryan Dank AfMichael Butanil is on the banned list of pesticides. What is that?
AtnIs that herbicide or a pesticide that's applied during the full year?
Ryan Dank AfMichael Butanil Eagle 20.
SpeakerOne, two, three. Oh.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, Michael Butenil is Eagle 20, so it's a fungicide. It's used for powdery mildew.
AtnI just wanted to explain it for people who didn't know.
BubblemanFucking Eagle 20. Eagle 20. Like, really? Why not just slap some Avid on there?
Ryan Dank AfWell, the problem is that it's, you know, like I said, it's a banned chemical. It's not even allowed to be used in the system. So it's a really, it really puts a kink in the whole... Did you know that product was actually developed by Eagle Bill in Amsterdam?
BubblemanThat is so not true.
SpeakerSo what you're saying is that product is not okay on pot, but it's fine in corn and soybeans and the rest of the crap that we eat. Is that it?
Ryan Dank AfWell, no, I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is that it's on the banned list of chemicals that isn't even allowed to be used in this production system, yet somehow it still turns up. There is issue, though, with it being used on. It's not approved for crops that are smokable. One of the byproducts is hydrogen cyanide.
SpeakerYeah.
Ryan Dank AfSo it's tobacco.
SpeakerYep.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, it's really something that... People probably shouldn't be using, even though it works quite well.
BubblemanPeople don't use tobacco medicinally, though. There's no way you're going to get to smoke tobacco in a fucking hospital because you have medicinal needs for it. Cannabis is a medicine, and tobacco is just a recreational poison. No, wait a minute, Mark. I knew it wasn't true the minute I said it. I was just going to see how fast it would take either of you Thank you. Thank you.
BubblemanThank you.
BubblemanYeah, well, they didn't call them hospitals. I figured you would understand what my definition of a hospital was. Real straight place where sick people go to die.
SpeakerYeah, I've seen them. I worked there a long time.
BubblemanI stay away from them as often as I can, but I'm just saying cannabis is a little bit different from tobacco in the sense that, well, it doesn't kill half a million people a year in America.
SpeakerWhat's killing the people with the tobacco is the constant, incessant use of it day after day, year in and year out. If they used it like a healing herb once in a while for some of the things that nicotine can do in small doses, it would probably be okay. But instead, they smoke three packs a day for 25 years.
Skunk ManWell, even smaller doses of tobacco, like a cigarette or two soaked in water, drink a glass of water, it'll kill some of the people. Oh, yeah.
BubblemanWell, they use pure nicotine to kill race horses when they break their legs. Just a syringe fall, pure nicotine, that thing is, the heart stops beating before the plunger hits the base.
Skunk ManWell, it's a good thing they die because otherwise they'd be addicted to smoking.
BubblemanThey'd get addicted to nicotine. I don't think nicotine is nearly as addictive as like Radium-226 and some of the other random shit that they spray on too. I like to actually call cigarettes, cigarettes. And tobacco, tobacco. Because tobacco is, you know, there's this huge historical context of indigenous people that have used this plant for many, many different reasons. Shamans use it to travel and to get back from psychedelic journeys.
BubblemanI see the importance of tobacco. Cigarette seems like some invented version of what they did with tobacco to, you know, to make everyone die.
SpeakerWell, you've got to remember, cigarette is... 200 other chemicals in there. So tobacco is only one ingredient in that chemical package that you're ingesting.
Skunk ManAlso, before the mid-1800s, 1850 about, they didn't have bright tobacco, which is heat flu cured tobacco. And all tobacco before that was black tobacco, which was absorbed through the mouth. It was not absorbed into the lungs. You couldn't inhale it. Because it had completely different pH and it just was not affected by inhaling. After they invented bright tobacco, then everything changed and cigarettes became the preferred delivery form for nicotine.
SpeakerI once had some black hash that you couldn't inhale either.
BubblemanOh yeah, I'll tell you.
Skunk ManYou should have cleaned it up for them.
BubblemanI'll tell you that what Indra just said is exactly why when I named my company and I coined the phrase bubble hash, because people are like, I wasn't trying to create anything I owned. It was before people started having to do that. I think I was just a little bit before everyone wanted to name something and come up with it. I was just trying not to step on Mila's toes and step on the history that already existed with Isolator and wanted to come up with a different name.
BubblemanAnd, you know, Bubble seemed to fit the... Let's face it, it's hard to come up with different names.
SpeakerWhat happens is... At an appropriate time in the culture, you might say a word that rings everybody's bell at the same time. And basically that's what you did. When you came up with Bubble Hash and Bubble Man, it resonated with everybody. I mean, you didn't call yourself Not at first. Small things strained out of a screen, man. That's fucking awesome.
BubblemanYeah, you're right. It's true. I called myself Bubble Man. I mean, it just seemed like a way to stay away from the ice isolator and just create this own sort of little niche, little bubble niche. And it's worked out rather well. It's been fun.
Ryan Dank AfThe niche of the world.
SpeakerAll things in good time, I always believe, you know. My patent languished for eight years. I mean, I did a lot of perfume and flavor work for big companies, but it was so fucking boring, I can't begin to tell you. There were certain times and parts of it that were interesting when I got to look in a chamber and see... Something coming out of the oil and the butane atmosphere like huge crystals or lots of crystals when it was interesting.
SpeakerBut the work up to that was incredibly boring. Sometimes you would have to grind stuff, handle it, prepare it, get it in the machine. Of course, work. Get it ready for extraction. You only get to see the interesting part in the last half hour or so while you're dropping it in the lower chamber and peering into the window. You saw the size of the windows on the bottom chamber on mine.
SpeakerThey're six-inch quartz windows that are more inches thick.
Skunk ManThat's why Marcus... Instead of calling it Bubble Later, he called it Bubble Now because he didn't want to wait.
BubblemanNo, listen, that was awesome because I was not selling those washing machines and it was Sam who emailed me and was like, hey, Mila's selling these washers. I think they must be a good thing or something. I was like, okay, well, I'll look into them and check it out. If they're good, I'll sell them. That was the first time Mila actually did. Thank you for joining us.
BubblemanBut she's Dutch and English isn't her first language and I don't think that she saw what was going to happen because my first full page ad in High Times and Cannabis Culture and Weed World and all these magazines was a picture of my bubble now and the reason I named it the bubble now was just so I could do this advertisement which was, why bubble later when you can bubble now?
BubblemanAnd that was like a full page ad that I ran for, I must have ran that for four to six months. And it was a good one, let me tell you. Like I'll tell you, the first time I saw Mila after making that ad, the vein in her forehead as she looked at me, I was like, oh man, like I don't think she found that funny. But I did, and that's all that really matters, you know?
BubblemanIt's gotta be funny, it's gotta be savage. Sometimes you gotta be savage. Rip that fucking Band-Aid right off. Anyway.
AtnIt is sarcasm church this morning.
BubblemanIt is sarcasm, Church. It kind of reminds me of the day Skunk Man Sam had Joseph Petrie pied at the Cannabis Cup. That was historic. For those of you that weren't there, it was quite a moment in time. It wasn't Petrie that got pied. Yeah, it was Marco Renda.
Skunk ManIt was Marco, right, for the Petrie stories. Is that thing still on Vimco or wherever you posted it?
BubblemanI don't know, but because I videoed that, that was the year I got a $6,000 cell phone bill because I was using live streaming on my phone with a Canadian number in Germany and Holland. For like three weeks straight, I was live streaming Steve Hopps and Nate Dizzle glassblowing with Martin from Ruhr. I was like, yeah, this is killer shit. Six grand later. Anyway, what I did was your wife videotaped the pying of Marco Rendo.
BubblemanAnd then I streamed her playing it back on the video camera screen. So it was this weird inverted stream of a video camera recording. But yeah, it should be up somewhere. And because I videotaped that, everyone thought for years that I pied Marco. Which is, for those of you unfamiliar with pying the whipped cream on the plate, I guess it's a way to avoid being arrested. Somehow it's a way to assault a person.
Skunk ManIt's a way of showing your complete dissatisfaction with them without physically harming them.
BubblemanBut also without being arrested, which is crazy because it's still kind of like you're assaulting that person.
Skunk ManWell, that's why I hired two naked, semi-naked girls from Attitude Seeds to do the tying.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, that's why it was conspiracy to assault.
SpeakerWhat happened to just saying a friendly, straightforward, fuck you?
BubblemanOh, no, listen, you have to understand the backstory here. The backstory is that this guy allowed for slander and libel to be printed about many, many people, Sam at the top of the list, in a magazine that printed 30,000 to 40,000 to 50,000 copies.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, when you become a publisher, you have a moral responsibility to do... You know, to do your homework and check into both sides of the stories. And he completely saved the world.
Skunk ManAnd I complained to Marco and he told me, listen, I'm just presenting, giving journalists a venue so they can express their opinion. Here, why don't you write a story, then you can say your side. And I said, yeah, sure, just what I want to do. Write a story to reward you with circulation on top of my misery that you've created, asshole.
BubblemanYou are in the right to feel that way, absolutely. I mean, I won't get into details, but the slander, and not only slander, what he really did was he ratted Sam out. And because in this community where we've all come from, maybe not where some are today, but where we've all come from, There is this sort of unsaid rule that you don't tell people where people live.
BubblemanYou don't give phone numbers away. You don't give names away. And in the beginning when we all had internet names and you didn't want your name next to your internet name because that was an outing. That was a way to out someone. One fucking hundred percent it was a rat move. And he did that to Sam. He put his fucking name right next to his internet name and then slandered him with a list of absolute 100% like so wrong information that I'm honestly surprised Sam didn't sue him.
Ryan Dank AfNo, and you know, like I've actually got something going on similar on the internet right now. People are writing some shit that's just completely untrue. And, you know, people don't realize how much they can fuck with you when they start lying about you or talking about things that they don't understand. Yeah. And they think that they have the whole story, but they don't really have any of the story.
Ryan Dank AfAnd this little piece of truth becomes a huge lie. And like you said, it becomes libel.
SpeakerThey're not calling you bald, are they?
Ryan Dank AfNo. Nobody would dare do that.
BubblemanHey, welcome D420K. We're just talking about slander, liableness, and potential assault.
Skunk ManNo, don't believe him. They were talking about bald guys.
AtnHey, hey, hey, hey now.
SpeakerI think we found our new moderator now for when Mark's not around. It's going to have to be Sam because he's the only one I know that can express the truth in the manner that he does.
BubblemanIt's very unique for sure. You have to take hundreds of hits of acid and melt away from your actual body for so long that you come back an atheist and only then can you have that unique perspective.
SpeakerYeah. I don't think he's really an atheist. I think that's a cover that he uses to enforce that I'm a tough guy.
BubblemanHe's trying to hide his Hare Krishna roots.
SpeakerYeah. Yeah, I think I remember seeing him on a street corner in Berkeley.
Skunk ManNo, but I've been to many Hare Krishna temples because my wife and I were vegetarian for 12 years. Dude, I'm telling you. We used to go to... Krishna Temple just for the food and what we thought was good vibes until we found out that they were also money laundering, selling drugs, and moving weapons internationally. I mean, these guys were serious, serious, serious criminals were involved in their organization.
SpeakerWell, in addition to that, the way they keep you coming back for that free dinner, I might add, it was free, right, is it's loaded with sugar. And so they change you into sugar zombies. You come there, eat the free dinner, and then you sit around afterwards going, hurry, hurry, while you're buzzing your fucking brains out.
BubblemanYeah, I was always opposed to the Salt Peter.
SpeakerSalt Peter? That never bothered me. I always used that as an aphrodisiac.
BubblemanThere you go. Oh, I'll mute my mic so you don't have to hear my obnoxiousness. Did we lose D420K and Johnny B? Is Johnny B gone as well? Oh, no, he's there. Tony's in the room, but no camera. All right.
AtnIt's like that right now.
AtnStill no Todd. Yeah, still no Todd. Yeah. What are you smoking on there, Bubble Man? What am I smoking on? Yes, what flavor?
BubblemanMy flavor of the day is MK Ultra, 25 micron, bubble hash squished into rosin, terp dipped into lemon tree. Welcome, D420K. Hey, bro.
SpeakerAnd, yeah, I think we'll... I tried to use headphones there. I bought a nice brand new set of Bose sound reduction, everything like that, and it's garbage.
AtnYeah, that's what Bose stands for. Could be. Could be.
SpeakerYeah, something. I don't know.
BubblemanDude, you know what your problem is, Darren? You know what your problem is? You're supporting huge corporations. You need to just build your fucking own, bro. You need to build your own.
SpeakerSo if anybody out there has an actual set of headphones besides Bose that they recommend me, I'll fucking buy them. I just spent money on those so I could listen to them on Hash Church and have the headphones like everyone else. Just to get them muted because they're too noisy. I don't fucking get it. Goddamn fucking waste of money. It could very well be your settings for your recording device on your computer.
SpeakerIf those settings aren't set up correctly, it could sound like shit because even 1995 headphones sound good if your computer is set up properly. So look under the settings.
SpeakerAnd get a look at all the settings you've got. Your settings might be Thank you for joining us.
SpeakerWell, fucking Happy New Year, brother.
BubblemanLet's fucking smoke a bowl. Look, look, there's little dabs over his shoulder.
AtnWhat's up, dabs?
SpeakerI'm going to have a tangerine, strawberry, banana dab on Frankenstein Extractions.
BubblemanWelcome, Tony V, in the house, fresh off the flight. I have to say that that lemon tree, I just exhaled it, and it is like a cannabis orgasm in your mouth.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, you definitely seem pretty up at the moment.
BubblemanDude, I'm telling you, it was so good.
SpeakerYou seem jacked up.
BubblemanI don't think it has anything to do with that meth I just snorted.
BubblemanHey, D, just to give you a little bit of what I'm going through with my headphones, I've got, like, nervous energy, so I move my feet all the time, and when my socks rub on my carpet, it builds up static electricity and shocks the inside of my fucking head. Like, I've gotten ten of them now already.
SpeakerIs that why you're yelling?
BubblemanYeah, that's why I'm yelling.
SpeakerHe's screaming.
BubblemanI'm excited!
SpeakerWe've got 2016 Honda Accords on sale now. Sunday, Sunday, Sunday.
BubblemanSunday, Sunday blowout. You know what? I'm not going to lie. I'm fucking excited right now. I'm excited.
AtnJust buy this seat.
BubblemanYou'll only need the edge.
SpeakerI did take your advice and I got a big, thick, nice banger. Oh, yeah.
BubblemanYeah. Oh, that's your thumb going that? That's a double XL? Oh yeah, that's the one.
SpeakerIs that the one you picked up in the glass shop up here? No, no. This one is... What happened to the one? Oh, no, I have that one as well, but that was not a 14.
SpeakerThis one was a, I don't know, SCB or SPC. I got it in San Francisco. How much was it? Really expensive.
BubblemanLike $85,000?
SpeakerNo, like probably under $200. Jesus Christ Almighty. Well, I tried to tell you.
BubblemanThat's a quave, right?
SpeakerYeah, but it's like.
AtnIt's an XL quave too.
BubblemanDouble XL, I think. Double, no?
BubblemanJust XL?
AtnI think it's just the XL.
SpeakerXL on a 14.
Skunk ManWow, but your thumb fits in it. I can remember I used to pay you $200 to take a pipe.
BubblemanDamn, those were the good old days, hey? Now we're like shelling out serious dough. No free motherships for me.
SpeakerWell, you know, I was just trying to, the example where we got this other quartz and somebody's like, yeah, this banger is like $12. And I'm like, hmm, I don't know why that feels wrong. I just think I feel like I should be paying a lot more. And they're like, oh, no, this is what it is. It's like 12 bucks or 15 bucks. I'm like, yeah, I don't know about that.
SpeakerI don't know. Why you would be selling me a quartz banger for that much? Like, oh, do you want to pay more? I'm like, yeah, I want to pay a lot more.
BubblemanListen, NY Euler, this guy knows his shit. If you follow him on Instagram, he's got heady glass. He's hitting it tight. He says they only make regular and double XL quave bangers. So that is a double XL banger. If your thumb fits in it, it's general. And you don't have small fingers. You're a big dude. That's a good size banger.
SpeakerBig banger. It's great for full melt. It's great for pretty much everything. I've seasoned it and it's nice. Beautiful.
BubblemanWell, I cleaned both my glass pieces for today. I felt like today was going to be a tough, puff tough kind of a hash church.
SpeakerWhy?
BubblemanWell, just because it's the new year. I slept in later than I have in so long. I woke up at like 9 o'clock today. Actually, my wife was like, it's 10 to 9. Don't you have hash church? And I was like, oh, that's so sweet, sweetie. No, I'm doing high noon hash church. Todd and Rob asked me on behalf of Tony, who actually showed up, and I don't know where the heck Todd and Rob are, but we're looking for you guys.
SpeakerWell, I was supposed to go to their place, but it's a little difficult these days since my car got broken into, so it's in the shop. Bummer, dude. Yeah. What'd they do, steal your sounds? No, they just broke the glass window, crawled through the vehicle, and there's nothing in my car ever, like literally nothing except my paperwork for the car and insurance. And they... They actually took nothing.
SpeakerThey left me a cup of coffee in my seat and they left all my paperwork. So they got just inconvenience of life, I guess.
Skunk ManI remember one time my friend had a car parked on the Albert Kite in Amsterdam and they broke into it and they stole a case of empty beer bottles.
SpeakerOh they did steal, I had those like for road trips you know when you get like stringent facial wipes like just to kind of moisturize your face. They took those. The only thing.
Skunk ManIt's easy to find who did it. Just look for the people with dirty faces.
SpeakerRight. Clean faces now.
Skunk ManOh, that's right.
SpeakerClean faces. Unbelievable.
BubblemanWell, did everyone have a good New Year? Did everyone bring it in with a bong rep or some good friends or family?
SpeakerI did a dab right at midnight. That was a full mouth goodness. Turk Dip, already sitting outside in the snow, cracked a bottle of champagne, and lit off fireworks in the front yard. It was awesome. Nice. Yeah, it was me and Helena, and it was just an epic way of bringing the new year. Beautiful. If you did a bong before we got a kiss, I'm like, sorry, honey.
BubblemanSweet, sweet. That sounds like a good plan.
Skunk ManYou know what? I find alcohol does not mix well with fireworks. The one time I drank like about a half a bottle of champagne, this must have been 30 years ago, I was in Thailand and I got so tired of lighting fireworks that I had bought, I threw a match into the box. Oh my God. Thermonuclear.
SpeakerJesus Christ. Well, you know how to have fun, Sam.
BubblemanSam knows how to do it up, I'll tell you. He's probably responsible for that giant factory in China.
Skunk ManThe one in Mexico City too.
BubblemanYou know what, the one in Mexico City is pretty impressive, I have to say. I just want to know that why is it when people film those videos, A, they never turn their fucking phone sideways, and B, whenever the good shit happens, they get so scared, their camera goes like, focuses down on their feet.
Skunk ManWell, and what I say is, wouldn't it have been a lot better if it would have gone off at night?
BubblemanWell, yeah, absolutely. Still pretty impressive, though. All right, I'm having a rip. I'm muting my mic and having a rip, so by all means, gentlemen.
SpeakerI'm going to show you what I did the other night. You know, stitches on my hand. I was doing dishes, minding my own business. Damn, dude. I was like, holy shit. And it was so nice hanging out. It was like, it was, my first thought was I could duct tape that. But then my daughter was here and she goes, Dad, you go to the hospital for that.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, I know. How many stitches was it?
SpeakerTen. I took two out already that got ripped out from the flap of the skin. But it's healed up nicely. You know, it's only been a couple of days. Well, you know what they say, D. Yeah.
BubblemanYou know what they say?
SpeakerNo. I'm sure you're going to tell me, though.
BubblemanDishes give stitches.
Skunk ManIs that from a dish or from a knife?
SpeakerA broken glass. Fuck. Nasty, dude. Don't throw the stuff in the sink before you wash it, damn it. I don't. But you know, I got a cold on Christmas Day. And I was sick and bedridden the whole week. I drank, the last three nights I've made these big, huge juice concoctions from my cold press juicer and I just overdosed on that stuff. And I feel great now and bong ripping with everybody.
SpeakerSo that was my Christmas week and my New Year's. I stayed home last night because I just didn't, if I go out at the tail end of this cold and go have a few talks with a whole bunch of people and everything, then guaranteed I'll be fucking sick of it. I just stayed home with my dog, pegged out, smoked out, went to bed. So which one of you threw the glass in this?
SpeakerIt was probably one of the kids. Don't blame them. John wants to get to the bottom of who broke that fucking glass, D. I just went right in and it just flapped. It didn't get no tendons or nickem at all. Just got the meat. But it was ugly. Bled good.
Skunk ManWell, that's why you need to eat and drink out of plastic plates, plastic forks and knives, and paper cups.
SpeakerPaper plates. Paper plates. So I don't have to do dishes. So I do less. Trust me. I do have the plastic cups, too. I'm a bachelor, man. I know how to do that for sure. Sometimes. Yeah. Then you probably would have got a paper cut. Yeah. Without, wouldn't have got stitches, though. It would have been okay.
BubblemanOh, we're glad you're okay.
SpeakerThanks, Bob. I haven't used a metal fork in years. I only use plastic forks, knives, spoons, paper plates, and plastic cups. I've used plastic many times myself. Mother lovers.
BubblemanYou know what the most incredible experience I ever had of like a recycling experience in India when I was at the Maha Kumbh Mela? These dudes, these dudes had this big pile of like clay and they would make these cups and they would make like many of them every day and then the sawdust would sit and smoke chillums and drink tea from these little clay cups and when they were done they just smashed them on this pile that would get like water on it and it would turn back into clay and they'd make more cups.
BubblemanIt was pretty fucking trippy.
SpeakerI'll tell you what, I don't know if you spotted it at the Kumba Mela, but there's another vendor there that takes those same clay cups and puts a yogurt mix in it and puts them in an oven and bakes them, and it changes into a custard, which they called Bombay Custard, and it is the most delicious stuff you think you've ever put in your mouth. I mean, I have sat outside the spot where they make those, and I told the guy, no more of these...
SpeakerThank you for watching.
SpeakerAll right, everybody.
AtnI'm heading out for the new year because it's early here at Hawaii time, so much love. Happy New Year, everybody, and have a great day.
SpeakerHey, Ted.
AtnHappy New Year, buddy.
SpeakerCheers again. Happy New Year, Ted.
BubblemanCheers, brother. Thanks for stopping in, bro. Aloha.
Skunk ManGulab jamun is good, but like you say, it is in pure sugar syrup. What I really like is ras malai.
SpeakerYeah, I like it. I didn't say I liked Gulab Juman. It's a diabetic starter kit.
BubblemanTony's dabbing it up out of the new piece. Heady Macarino.
BubblemanYeah, a lot of people on, you know what, everyone on the, it's like, Andrew just got new glass, fucking Johnny B's got new glass, Tony's rocking new glass, I just got a few new pieces. It's a lot of new glass on the panel, no doubt about it.
SpeakerI'll tell you, I was getting, having a hard time getting excited about dabs using all the really inferior stuff and the electric nail and the rest of it. I was getting burnt out on it. When ATN gave me this thing, I tried it first at the Emerald Cup. He had one. And I was just blown away by how smooth and nice and easy it was. And now that I've gotten mine, I've been dabbing like crazy day in and day out.
SpeakerIn fact. I spent two and a half hours last night doing a dry sift to get myself a bunch of transparent little heads to try out myself. I can imagine that I would ever sit for two and a half hours to do that. I probably never will again. What I did though is I ordered a little tiny motor which provides horizontal vibration And I'm going to hook that to my screen and put it over top of a liquid nitrogen overhead with a 200, what is it?
BubblemanLPI, LPI, 200 LPI.
SpeakerIt's more like 70 microns. Yeah, 70 microns. And I'm going to see if that will give me that little pile a little easier and a little faster.
BubblemanIt'll make your starting material a little bit nicer for certain, but I bet you it gets you to like 80% heads or something.
SpeakerWell, I would start with 140 material that went through 140 screens. Yeah. Farmer's grade. Farmer's grade, but a little better than farmer's grade. He puts it through 140 screens, but he doesn't.
BubblemanMaybe 50% heads or something?
SpeakerHe also made bubble hash with it and it turned out dark, but it's like clumps of oil. It's just totally. And I put a clump of it in a jar and put it in the freezer. And I took it out and shook it up and I did that all day. And when I got done with it this morning looking at it again after that, it had changed essentially back into a powder.
BubblemanNice, yeah, well, that's the good bubs. The best bubble hash when using the right cultivars is really on point with the best dry sift, but it's rare to find them both in their top forms. It's rare.
Skunk ManWell, I'm smoking out of an old pipe, an old drizzle. Dude, look at that, the Dizzles. It's actually pretty dirty, and I'm ashamed I haven't washed it in a couple days.
BubblemanThere's the one from the same year.
SpeakerA couple of days. It looks like it's been months.
BubblemanNo, no, you have to understand. There's a difference between us real smokers and lightweight guys. Yeah, no, for real. You can't imagine how much that dude puffs. It's like they could do a documentary on that shit. It's next level for sure. I love it.
SpeakerSam's so predictable.
BubblemanHe puffs tough, I'll tell you.
SpeakerWell, it's time to do a nice dry self-rep. That's some Congolese that we cleaned there in the middle of last year. What did you say, Sam? Say that again?
Skunk ManI said, I agree. My pipe is shamefully dirty.
BubblemanOh, you know what? Shredder0911 has the best. He's got the best quote in the chat room. He says, Sam. Sam Chaz the Dizzle. I don't know why I find that so funny. From when Brett Maverick was on here the other day, he was like, oh, they call that Chaz-ing a banger when you fuck it up like that. And it just, it sounded so funny to me. I think that you all should laugh as well.
Skunk ManThe good thing about it is all it needs is some hot water and Dr. Bonner's.
BubblemanYeah, a little Dr. Bonner's and she's clean as a whistle. Yeah, you know what? I bet you, what is Dr. Bronner's? Like, what is the makeup of it, Sam? It's peppermint oil. Peppermint oil, right. And hemp seed oil. This one that I've been using? Is Karanja oil and a process of coconut extract, kelp extract, and sugar cane extract. And it is unbelievable how well it cleans a quartz banger.
BubblemanDo you like the taste of it? I don't taste it at all.
SpeakerThere's no taste. That was what I was going to ask. How's that taste?
BubblemanNo taste. I don't drink it. And I just clean my banger with it. And as you can see, as you can see, my banger is not chazzed.
SpeakerWell, it sounds good, though. It sounds tasty.
Skunk ManWell, Marcus, if you send it to me, I'll chazz it up for you for free.
SpeakerOh, yeah, that reminds me, Sam. What's the address where I send half of the samples I got given to me at the Emerald Cup?
Skunk ManNumber one. That's box 55555.
SpeakerChazzed.
BubblemanThat was funny. Ah, the youth. The youth. Well, I'm looking forward to 2017. I'm looking forward to heading back to Jamaica sometime here in the new year and checking out things with the company and what's going on. That's going to be exciting.
SpeakerYeah, that sounds like fun.
BubblemanYeah, it's always good to get away for a little bit, you know, even if it's not the three plus month stints I've been dreaming about.
SpeakerListen, going to the cup was a getaway for me. I was practically bedridden for four days afterwards. My body was so stiff. But on the fifth day when I got up out of bed, I felt better than I felt in a long time. And I took a good long walk that day. And I've been taking good long walks since. So I thought...
BubblemanWell, you know what a really cool idea would be is to create like a Burning Man style. I'm putting it out there for all you burners. We want a living room of multiple couches, maybe a nice carpet on the bottom, a table in the middle, and we want it to drive like a car so we don't have to walk back and forth. We can just all be sitting on these couches.
BubblemanThe Hash Church Lounge and just drive it back and forth to the different areas. It might take up a lot of room, but I'm sure they'll facilitate us if we build it.
SpeakerYou mean like a big Grayhound bus with a lounge inside?
BubblemanWell, not quite that big, but sure. Yeah, shit. That would be great. No Chaz and the Banger, guys. No Chaz and the Banger.
SpeakerYou know, you can buy Bluebird school buses. Quite deep with diesel pushers and so forth. On a relatively low mileage, like under 150,000 miles for six, seven, eight, $10,000. Really nice vehicles. You can even get a handicapped one. The handicapped ones have a bathroom. Built into them and a lift so that you can have a wheelchair to be picked up and put in it. And those are for sale.
SpeakerIt costs a few extra bucks, but hey, it's worth it to have a shitter in the vehicle.
BubblemanLook, it can't be a vehicle. It literally has to be a living room on wheels. And if you want, we can have a shitter. In a bathroom, also on wheels, so you can, no problem. And we'll have a masseuse, so you can get massaged throughout the day. So at the end of it, you're not bedridden for four days, because that's ridiculous, man. That's pain. Johnny B used to do shit like that all the time.
BubblemanI'd see him go to the cannabis cup and work so hard for Medtainer, just talk to every single person, be on his feet for 18 hours a day, hustling harder than anyone, all fucking neck broken and fucked up after his accident. And how long were you fucking crippled? Okay, no, the best one was when you brought your Argo to man camp when you were totally in pain and proceeded to give everyone a traumatic Argo ride through the forest.
BubblemanThat was amazing, dude, because you paid the piper on that one too. Yeah, you were like for two weeks, you were just like, bro, that was the funnest camping trip ever, but oh my God, I can't move. I was like, I was feeling for you, bro.
SpeakerYou know what? That was then. This is now. I feel, wow.
Skunk ManYou know what?
SpeakerWell, you're off. 2016 changed my life. Those surgeries, you know, 2016 was amazing. Amazing year for, for definitely for Astro 2.
BubblemanIt gave me a more positive outlook on surgery. I will tell you that. I was always kind of afraid. I was like, I only heard nightmare stories. I wasn't hearing very many good stories, but watching you go through that, And it was pretty heavy because you could have been crippled or could have potentially had something worse happen. I'm sure that you had to sign papers when they operated on you.
SpeakerOh, I had to go get a living will and everything because they took out the C4C5. It was a good surgery. You know what? It changed my life. I needed it. But before, like you said, I mean, I just, I, Hash got me through my days every day. You know, I puffed tough and hard. The difference is, you know what? That's what got me through my days.
SpeakerAnd that was, that's how it worked. Growing and getting good meds and spreading the good word about how cannabis is saving my life.
BubblemanDo you have a mothership flower bowl on your pipe?
SpeakerYeah, actually. Nice. A little mothership. I scoped that. I produced some dry sift in here. I got some, I'm smoking all my killer sift that I've had for all through the year, all my little Congolese wins and stuff like that. That's what I'm, So what I'm doing right now, I've got my little 2016 little special sash that I'm just kind of puffing a little bit of and remembering a little great remembering 2016.
SpeakerAwesome. Tough. My neck didn't do that, but I had a very similar thing. I have two titanium cages in my lower back holding it together as a result of Being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I went to Vietnam, volunteered. And so that's how that happened. But I know the trauma that you go through because when they put them in my back, it was a very long operation and it was very difficult.
SpeakerAnd after he came out of it, Couldn't really lay comfortably on your back and so they put me in a special bed and you know nobody was bringing me joints or anything but I'm not sure I could have even smoked I felt so bad until I got out of the hospital but I truly understand the agony that you went through.
BubblemanOh, you should have seen him in the hospital. First of all, I'll tell you, he was about by 10,000 times the happiest person in the hospital. Everyone else had just suffered some traumatic neck or back injury. People were in these special beds with like posts coming out of their necks, stabilizing and holding them in place. And, you know, we walked around the corner. And it was like, oh, there's Johnny B.
BubblemanAnd it was like, I thought he was going to pop right out of the bed and just start dancing. We were like, calm down, dude. You look great. You're super excited. But you just had a surgery on your spine. He was like, I feel great. You don't even understand. Was it not amazing, D.? Well, yeah, I was just going to add, he was dancing.
SpeakerHe got out of the hospital. I know, I know, he did. He was dancing across his floor and everything like that. Almost running up my stairs up to my apartment. He had so much trouble going up and down my stairs. He'd have to go sideways one way and then the other way and shuffle and shimmy. And now he's just like, I can walk straight up these stairs, no problem.
SpeakerAnd he's double-stepping it, chasing me up there. He was doing... Well, the absence... He was pushing the absence pretty good with... Dabs.
BubblemanThere's dabs. Dabs. Hey, there's Mark Scaldone coming off of four nights at MSG. Woo. Man. Did you melt your face away?
SpeakerI got a blank space where my mind should be.
BubblemanI got a blank space where my mind should be.
SpeakerGreat, great fish tune, I have to say. Yeah, it was awesome. It was, I don't know, I'm out of superlatives. It just keeps on getting better. The gag was pretty interesting, you know? Yeah. Yeah. So they always do like a New Year's gag, you know, like a big some type of production or something like that. And, you know, so last night what they did is they on their latest album, Big Boat, there's a very orchestrated tune called Petrichor.
SpeakerIt's a very long, multi-sectional tune. And it's about rain. Petrichor is the smell. After Rain, you know, that's the smell of rain.
BubblemanDidn't even Trey write that with like an orchestra in mind or some other like horns and shit?
SpeakerYeah, actually, absolutely. I saw the debut of that with the Portland Symphony Orchestra in Portland, Oregon. Right. Some time ago. But yeah, it was, it's written for, it's a very orchestral piece. And they, it's on their latest album. And so they did have some accompanying musicians at a horn section. Most notably Jen Hartswick and Natalie Cressman on horns. The other dude, the baritone sax player from Trey's band.
SpeakerAnd also the guy from Hamilton, the drummer from the Broadway show Hamilton was the percussionist on stage. And they had a bunch of like fake rain. I guess they were these little plastic foam drops kind of fall down and there were a bunch of dancers on stage and umbrellas going up and down. And then it started raining cats and dogs and literally cats and dogs Balloon cat and dogs fell from the ceiling.
SpeakerThat was kind of cool. A lot of raindrops fell. It was cool. Someone shouted me out from Hatch Church. I got to say hi to, what was the guy's name? I think Matt from Wisconsin. Hey, man. Thanks for pointing me out. Nice.
BubblemanMan, sounds great. I wish, well, you know what? I saw my buddy Slinger post on Facebook the other day how he was like, oh, fish is playing down in Mexico. Maybe this would be something cool to do next year. And he tagged Jason Lee. And those are basically two guys that I met picking them up hitchhiking on fish tours. It would be very cool next year to end up 2018 with a whole group.
BubblemanBobo, man, that's actually a show that you can go to.
SpeakerYou can go to Mexico, right? I can go to Mexico. Dude, come on, man. Let's go.
Skunk ManAll right. I do have a miracle for Hash Church, and that is Little Hot Water and Dr. Bonner's.
BubblemanOh, shit. Look at that. Sam knows how to clean a pipe. Dizzle would be proud.
Skunk ManNow I can get stoneliness again.
BubblemanThere you go, there you go. You're back to where you... The Dizz is de-chazzed, says Chemdog.
SpeakerHey, did you ever read that article that the Duchess did on Hash Church?
BubblemanI never did see it. I saw like she posted some pictures, but it wasn't like the whole article, was it?
SpeakerThere's an article out on Hash Church. I haven't read it.
BubblemanYeah, no, I just never read it. I just saw her.
SpeakerI never did either. I've been looking for it, and her birthday is actually today. I remembered because she's a first. Oh, wow.
BubblemanWell, happy birthday.
SpeakerWhere's the article published at? I think she did it with Dope, didn't she?
BubblemanI thought Cannabis Now Magazine.
SpeakerCannabis Now Magazine. Yep.
BubblemanThat's the one, eh?
SpeakerYeah, I don't know. I didn't see it. I just had to look out for it. There was like a thing done on Hash Church. Well, that's cool. Yeah, I think it's not out of the question to do something with Burning Man 2 this year. I think that's a cool idea, a Hash Church living room, like a live moving Hash Church.
BubblemanYeah, just like a wicked remote control. Maybe it turns. It's like, you know, it could just be very... It'd be fun.
SpeakerYou have to make it really, really. I was going to say the high desert, there's a lot of wind blowing around, and in that wind, there's a fine dust. That dust is going to get all into your oil and your hash though, right?
BubblemanHey, I was thinking of doing the Burning Man idea, like the building of a cool vehicle, not at the Burning Man, but at the Emerald Cup.
Skunk ManMm-hmm.
BubblemanSo we could roll around on a living room. So when the security guard says you can't come in here, we could just say, no worries, bro.
SpeakerWhat if you could create a vacuum sealed room, Mark, where you get inside the living room and there's another room inside that room that has zero pressure. And you're like, all right, if you want to dab, you have to get inside there. And you're just like, it's a single person dab containment, you know, at Burning Man. Like an interlock. There has to be like an interlock in between the sterile zone where you could actually take out hash and not worry about it getting all crested up by the fucking desert, man.
SpeakerThey have windstorms that just completely come out of nowhere, blow through those camps, and everything just gets dusty and dirty, man. It's nuts.
BubblemanYeah. Fuck that. I'll go see fish in the Mayan Riviera.
SpeakerThat's epic.
BubblemanYour buddy Henry will be down there, Mark. Listen, I have never been able to go to a fish show as Bubble Man. That's how long I haven't been going to fish shows.
SpeakerYou need to go. Surrender to the flow, man. What the fuck?
BubblemanWell, I just had all these kids and family. I want to surrender to the flow. I'm busy, man. I got responsibilities. I wish I could be in Mexico in January, but I have responsibilities. Hey, Mark.
SpeakerDude, I got responsibilities. Mark, on Cannabis Now Magazine, there's an article on marijuana and catnip.
SpeakerAre they crossing them? No, it says here, right on their page, it says, how to enjoy a session with your furry friend.
SpeakerYeah, I'm looking on their website, too, now. See if I can find... I don't see that article, though.
BubblemanWell, just contact the Dank Duchess. She has it. It's probably not online. It's like in print. It's a magazine article.
SpeakerI think I found it. Let me see.
BubblemanDon't even think about ditching us, Johnny B. You're in it for the fucking long run. Jesus. I got to do breakfast and stuff.
SpeakerI got to.
SpeakerHey. Chicken sausages sitting out, and I got eggs, and we got some nice thick toast, and I'm going to make a nice little afternoon brunch, and I'll be showing snow all morning, and I'll be puffing my little dry siffle toast out for the day, and just kind of sit back and enjoy 2017, and Wow, we've got a lot going on, but I want to say thanks to everybody.
SpeakerYou know what? Have a fantastic day.
BubblemanAnd hey, are we going to film Puff Wednesday on Tuesday morning at 5 a.m.?
SpeakerWe are. That's what we're doing. Excellent.
AtnExcellent.
SpeakerI will see you at 5 a.m. I'll talk to you later, my friend. All right, dude.
BubblemanHave a good one. Say hi to your better half.
SpeakerShe's basically looking at me. Happy New Year, everybody. See you, guys. Tony, post the URL, Tony. Well, I found a link where it says, look at Duchess's article, and then when I go to it, it's like, buy the magazine. So I'm trying to find another way to... No, you have to buy the magazine.
BubblemanWow. Or you could contact the Dank Duchess and she could photograph the article and send it to you.
SpeakerShe said she did.
BubblemanI'm just trying to find out where that is. I am wondering where Sir Todd is.
BubblemanWhere is Todd?
BubblemanNew Year's Day, anything could have happened. It could have been a real crazy like hangover type night. I'm doubting it.
Ryan Dank AfWhile we're up, No, we were talking to them last night. They seem pretty mellow.
BubblemanYeah, I'm just joking. I don't see them getting all wild.
SpeakerTodd is like a chess piece of steadiness, you know?
Ryan Dank AfIs that a thing? Is that a thing? Like a chess piece of steadiness?
SpeakerI just can't see. Todd, you know, I spent a couple hours with him at the Cup, and he's very steady, very sweet, very nice guy, but he's not excitable, if you know what I mean. He maintains a certain vibratory level of existence.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, he's pretty even keel.
SpeakerYeah, I couldn't see him drinking himself into a stupor and acting like a jackass.
BubblemanNor could I. Nor could I. We lost Tony. We lost John. And Sam.
Skunk ManNo, I'm here.
BubblemanSam, tricky. Interesting.
Skunk ManI'm trying to check out to see what's going on with Todd.
BubblemanAh, we will find out what is going on for Todd.
SpeakerMe, I'm going to have another hit of this lemon skunk times skunk. This is just really making me into a rosin monster.
BubblemanExcellent.
SpeakerPretty soon I'll be walking tonight just like Frankenstein going, fire, bad. Rosin. Rosin. Good.
BubblemanIndra, embrace the rosin.
SpeakerI have to. It's fucking fantastic stuff. I mean, I have one of these new presses on the way now from China that is neither pneumatic nor hydraulic. It's electric. And it produces all the proper pressure and it's much lighter and it's got three or four different platen sizes. And when it gets here, I will start pressing my own rosin because I found several people up here in the woods selling quarter pounds of 140 sift rosin.
SpeakerFor 350 to 400 bucks. And I just take that stuff and refine it down to the clear. And surprisingly enough, even on 156 thread per inch screen, it produces almost clear resin. Glass-like. And I'm getting real addicted to that stuff. And by the way, Sam, it reminds me, it reminds me, Sam, I want to say something to you. I've been wanting to say it for a little bit now.
SpeakerYour method of dry sift produces 99% and my fast cold separation method does not do that. But what it does do is it gets 100% of all the trichromes that are in The only thing I wasn't sure about is have you ever tested for THC the debris after your processing? No, I haven't really. Probably should, but...
Skunk ManThe first time I tested debris after dry sifting, there was 45 to 50% of the THC was still fucking in it.
SpeakerStill in what? The dry sift? Still in the debris. Oh, in the debris.
SpeakerIf you try to do the same thing again, if I try to cold sift it once again under the right conditions, it comes up with nearly nothing, maybe a teaspoon of more trichromes, but that's it. I don't know. There's a lot more THC in the green material because what I have done is shaken all the trichromes up. At one particular point, a measured pound gave up 138 grams of trichromes.
SpeakerThen the debris was extracted for 129 grams of oil.
Skunk ManIf you got oil, then that means there was still THC in the debris, correct?
SpeakerRight, but it was in the leaf.
Skunk ManThat's what you claim, but I know no botanist that agrees with you. So I would really like to get to the bottom of this. Because if you're correct, then I need to rewrite my book.
SpeakerOkay, well, next time you get into town, come on over and I'll give you a demonstration.
Skunk ManI've been there once.
BubblemanNo, no, no, no. Let's do it in Jamaica. Please, fellas, please. Let's do it in Jamaica.
SpeakerWell, okay. Did you see the little video I made of it, Sam?
Skunk ManOf what?
SpeakerMe separating a pound of pot. No, no, I did not. Okay, I'm going to send you a video of it and you can have a look at that and then send me your thoughts on it.
Skunk ManYeah, well, I definitely get the impression from what you and other folks have said that yours does a more complete extraction. I have no doubt of that. And I've always whined and bitched about how low my extraction rate is. Because I commonly, if I started with 500 grams, I got, you know, 5 or 10 grams of 99.9.
SpeakerYeah, listen, I had that experience last night. I sat for two and a half hours dry sifting and carding some material. And I had a little bit of liquid nitrogen, and so I put some in a coffee cup and stuck it underneath the screen, which seemed to help a bit because in the morning when I woke up, I was too tired to fuck with it anymore last night, so I went to bed.
SpeakerI went to bed early so that I could wake up at midnight, but all that happened at midnight was I woke up and said, what the fuck is that alarm? And I went back to sleep. But anyway, in the morning I took a look at the glass pane that I was sifting it on and it has a really nice layer of these...
Skunk ManI still remember the first time we tried dry sifting at high temperatures with a fairly high humidity. It sucked. And then we got a walk-in freezer and it... Really, really did help a lot, but it still doesn't even approach the level that you're talking about.
SpeakerWell, I'm fond of cold. For years, I studied and watched and was part of many chemical experiments and processes, and I noticed they were always used heat. Somehow that didn't set with me and I decided that it must be that cold is at least as good a separator as heat and maybe even better in some cases. And so I've started experimenting with using cold. Like I said, this new, right now what I'm playing with is I'm chopping up plants that were harvested 10 minutes ago and putting them in the extraction chamber and getting this really, really pristine oil unlike other oils that I have seen.
SpeakerAnd it's very light and beautiful and it seems to be mostly devoid of Thank you so much for joining us.
SpeakerAnd it's very, very, very fragrant. It's very aromatic. And I'm going to pour it through some molecular sieves to eliminate the water, if that's what you're getting ready to say, Mark. And then when it comes out the bottom, I'll see what it is. I sent off for a new box of molecular sieves because I'm just fresh out of them. But I use them a lot. I hadn't realized that I'd run out.
SpeakerThat's cool. Say what? This is live resin, right? You've made live resin. Well, I guess you could say that. What I'm thinking about doing now is putting some more molecular sieves in the chamber right on the bottom of the material and then extracting it and eliminating water right there so that if there's a terpene Thank you for watching.
SpeakerYeah, this is live resin, man. Thanks for explaining that. I was wondering myself if that wasn't the case because it was noticeably absent in waxes. And so I'm thinking the wave of the future is using my system. And furthermore, what I want to do is I want to cut a plant, say, in three or four sections. Stick it right in the extractor. Pour in a little bit of liquid nitrogen.
SpeakerCrush it right in the extractor. Add another plant, add a little more liquid nitrogen, crush it until the extractor is full, minimizing the handling of the plant and loss of possible terpenes. And then when it's completely full, like I got 100 pounds of fresh plant material and they're closing it off and making the extraction. And I need that many fresh plants. And I'm sure that you're right that it's going to be an excellent new way to avoid waxes and other things because the oil is just the most incredible oil I have ever fucking seen.
SpeakerIt's just... Really beautiful. It has its own, it has a, it's so terpene rich in smell that the first sniff you take of it makes you start sneezing almost. Yeah, this is basically the category that's called live resin. And I have a funny story to relate. I had a friend, actually a good, good friend, Dave Malone from Green Dot in Boulder, Colorado, come visit me. We were going to see a fish show in September back on Labor Day.
SpeakerAnd I was staying at a, I don't know, Holiday Inn Express or something like that. And my room was right by the elevator. And Dave showed up and opened two or three jars of live resin in the room. And within about 20 minutes, I got a knock on the door. And it was the young lady from behind the desk. And she said that there was a complaint of marijuana smell.
SpeakerAnd we hadn't even dabbed. All he did was open a couple jars in my room. And my window was open. And my door was right next to the elevator. So someone got off the elevator. And if I remember correctly, he was showing me things like Clementine and I think there was a Jack Herrera cross in there, but these things were just so damn fragrant. And I think Tony will vouch that Green Dot is one of the best live resin makers in Colorado.
SpeakerAnd I can't believe that we got a complaint in the room for marijuana smell from just opening I'm telling you, when just opening the chamber to get it out, everywhere in the place smelled like it. It was just totally permeated everything. Even
SpeakerTwo and a half or three hours later, when someone stopped by, I opened the door and before they walked in the house, they smiled and looked at me and said, whoa, let's smoke some of that shit. Right. Even when you exhale, the exhale has a lingering effect. Like when you exhale those and they're very fruity and flavorful, it'll definitely flavor the fragrance of a room, that's for sure.
SpeakerYeah, lovely, lovely stuff. I think in the future, I'm going to really start mainlining on extracting fresh, fresh plants. I think it's going to be the wave. It's living oil as well. Yeah, so I guess the trade-off there is that if you're putting dried material into your extractor versus wet material into your extractor, the water is some of the weight of the material, and certainly the water bears no trichomes or THC or cannabinoids.
SpeakerThere is a certain slight solubility of some of the terpenes that are in cannabis and water, and that's the hydrosol you're seeing.
SpeakerIn terms of productivity, if you're extracting, say, 5 or 10 pounds of material, and you're extracting dried, cured material, and you're extracting live resin, you're going to get a very, very different yield. And that's, I guess, sort of the trade-off if you're in full production mode. Well, let me say this about that. If you're going to extract an entire plant, And you freshly chopped it down like today and you take a sister plant to it and you chop it down and you hang it up and dry it and you dry it for what, maybe three, four weeks and then toss it in the extractor that you will find that the yields are not significantly different from the day you cut it down because that's the day when the plant was at its peak.
SpeakerMaximum oil yield. And it's not going to get any better after that because some of the stuff's going to dry and it's going to change. And so I think that you're probably working off of a theory there. And I know you're Mr. Chemistry, but my anecdotal experience thus far has been that a freshly chopped down plant, not one You know what I'm saying? I mean, like the day you decided, hey, it's today that I'm going to harvest this plant because you want to hang it and dry it is really the day you're going to probably get the best oil yield out of it.
SpeakerI know you're going to get the most terpene rich oil on that day. That oil smell that comes out of that, what you're calling live resin. Yeah, I agree on the terpenes, but it's impossible if you're putting certain amount of water In weight, in your extractor, say you're extracting 10 pounds and say, you know, I don't know, a third of one of those pounds is water, you don't get any productivity by extracting water.
SpeakerSorry, that's just the way it is. No, but the water comes out separate in the chamber. I get that, but okay, I guess you're missing my point, John. The water does come out separately, but you could be putting... I totally agree with you. What El Soli's data showed by curing in paper bags is that you lose about 20% of your terpene content. That's the only published data that I'm aware of that talks about terpene content on a one-month cure.
SpeakerGo ahead. I'm sorry. You missed my original explanation of this, which was I put one plant at a time in thirds or fourths even into the extractor unit. Then I dump in a little liquid nitrogen and reach in with a baseball bat and crush it. And I keep doing that until I got a hundred pound load in there. And when I get 100 pounds of fresh load in there that has been crushed up under liquid nitrogen, it's really no mass difference negligible for me putting dry bud in there that's crushed up.
SpeakerYou know, it's the crushing it under liquid nitrogen makes it very powder-like and it produces a very superior extract because you immediately close it up, pull a vacuum on it while it's still frozen. You hit it with the butane, but it comes through these special nozzles that create a serious temperature drop, and you're keeping it right at and right near the same kinds of temperatures. You get this pristine oil and it smells better.
SpeakerI don't care what anybody says. I've smelled that and smelled the very same plant extracted three weeks later that was dry. And the first thing my friend said to me when he smelled the both of them was, can we add some of this oil to that oil so it all smells like that? And that's a common thing I've heard back a number of times from people who've made that kind of extraction.
Skunk ManIf you do the extraction two, three, four weeks before the plant is fully mature, does the oil come out consistently different? In other words, terpenes go through a smell change from early flowering to medium flowering to full flowering to past flowering. The smells change consistently.
SpeakerWell, I've had a couple of people bring me what I call cut down crops where their grow was interrupted way early by one reason or another. They had to cut it down and so they brought it to me asking me if I could get anything out of it. And I have extracted some of these very immature crops. Flowers for people and it produces a very light fraction oil and because it's concentrated, it's okay, but it's not the best of all second chances.
Skunk ManRob Clark used to like to pick plants a week or two earlier than I did. He liked them when they were what he called more younger and upper, whereas I wanted maximum potency. So, I mean, my varieties in general were not couch-locked. They were up to start with. But so, and I know that what was changing was the terpene profile.
SpeakerWell, I used to have a deal with people where I would take a pound of their material. Over a period of time, I would assay once in a while what their buds were producing to see if they wanted to harvest it. And from the assay and then analyzing the yield and the output, the smell and the flavor, they would decide. I mean, I would sometimes, getting close to harvest time, assay it for people once a week.
SpeakerAnd when the plant would get at its peak output, they would chop it down and, you know, we would carry on after that. But it's another thing that...
Skunk ManThe other thing that I found was that when I pulled my plants when they were mature, whether it was haze or skunk or whatever the frick it was, and I would dry them for about two weeks until I could box them up and cure them for a couple of months. But if I would smoke it after two weeks of drying, I could technically do it, but it would give me laryngitis.
Skunk ManI don't know if the terpene levels were too high or I don't know what the problem was. The weed was dry, but it was not cured.
SpeakerWhat were you extracting it with again?
Skunk ManI wasn't extracting it. I was smoking the herbal cannabis.
SpeakerOh, but it wasn't ready yet to smoke, right?
Skunk ManWell, it was dried for two weeks, so it's already dried better than they sell in Amsterdam coffee shops. But to me, pot ain't ready until it's been cured for a couple of months after the dry.
SpeakerYeah, no fucking pot before it's time. I agree. You know?
Skunk ManSo what I'm wondering is when people do this fresh stuff and they smoke it for long periods of time, are they going to get laryngitis? Like I used to get laryngitis every winter around Thanksgiving time. It was for me taking varieties that had only been dried for a week or two and trying them because I wanted to see how good they were.
SpeakerYeah, well, you were smoking a lot of stuff that was combustible that wasn't good for you in the first place. Combustible, let's face it, inhaling smoke into your lungs as a way of getting high is probably... Yeah, but the same plant three months later didn't do it to me at all. Right, because it had time to matriculate out of the plant material. Whatever it was that was irritating your throat and lungs.
Skunk ManOkay, but when you do fresh extractions, are you going to grab that irritating thing? No.
BubblemanI think that there's not just curing the plant, but there's also curing the terpene profile. So I think there's two different things. I think Sam's talking more about the, I've had this conversation with Rob that are there terpenes that we potentially maybe want to wait for them to evaporate out and I have experienced this where a sharper terpene is there early on and as it cures out that one lifts up like a blanket and releases this sort of the cured terpene profile.
BubblemanIt is substantially different. I'm sure that it's not a hugely different profile like done through a lab, but I guarantee you there's a particular terpene or two that are gone, that have evaporated, that are the most volatile.
Skunk ManI figured it was from hazes, which were what I considered the most terpy fucking varieties in the universe. And it happened to me every year for five or six years in a row.
SpeakerHmm.
Skunk ManI would have laryngitis for a week or two. I couldn't...
SpeakerBut that didn't slow you down from smoking it, did it?
Skunk ManNo, I would...
Skunk ManNo, I still smoked, but yeah, I couldn't talk.
SpeakerWell, laryngitis doesn't have anything to do with the lungs, right? This is up in the voice box in the larynx up here.
Skunk ManI'm not saying what's getting irritated. I'm saying something is getting irritated.
SpeakerRight. And it's probably a terpene or a mix of terpenes that's somehow changing. And terpenes are metastable, meaning that they are stable while the plant's living. But yeah, as I think what Mark was referring to in terpene curing is that the chemical composition of some of the more minor terpenes in there Thank you so much for joining us.
SpeakerHow about terpenes plus chlorophyll plus heat makes for fucking lung irritant. Fuck chlorophyll, man. Everyone's all jammed up on chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a big ass fucking molecule. Think of it this way. Think of it this way. Small House is the molecule we're going after. Chlorophyll is like a fucking skyscraper. It's a big-ass fucking molecule. To be honest, It's just not easily extracted. It's in the plant tissue.
SpeakerIt's not easily extracted. Most of the pigmentation, most of the color is not due from chlorophyll, folks. It's due from other highly colored compounds. Mark.
Skunk ManTo be honest, I thought it was some of the more volatile monoterpenes. But I don't know this. It's just what I assumed.
SpeakerWell, wait a minute. He said he's smoking it while it's still green, so obviously there's going to be chlorophyll present. That chlorophyll plus heat and plus the terpenes. That doesn't necessarily mean there's chlorophyll present just because it's green. You know? In a plant? I'm not assuming it. He said... You know, I was listening to his story about smoking it.
Skunk ManTo me, uncured cannabis is what I call greeny. You can call it chlorophyll, you can call it whatever you want, but it's not, it's like uncured wine, uncured meat, uncured cheese. It just ain't as good.
SpeakerUncured cheese is fucking milk.
Skunk ManLook, aged meat is better than regular meat. Anybody that likes a good steak knows this.
SpeakerDo you want to back that up? I haven't eaten any cows for 45 years, so I wouldn't know.
Skunk ManWell, I ate them for you in your name. That's good.
SpeakerThey're all yours. I'm just not into the cows as food. I like that they're friendly and nice.
BubblemanI like to take mushrooms with the cows. They're cool. I don't eat them.
SpeakerThe cows all know right where the mushrooms are too, by the way. If you've ever gone mushroom picking, let me tell you, what you do is after the first few mushroom patches you find and you eat them and you start getting high, Then you ask one or two of the cows where the rest of them are, and they will lead you right fucking to them.
BubblemanThey'll say something like, follow the vibrations. This is hemp.
SpeakerSomeone asked me. Nice t-shirt. I like it.
BubblemanThat's got the Bill Hicks quote.
SpeakerStand up so I can see the whole thing.
BubblemanThere it is right there. There it is.
SpeakerThere it is. It's just what?
Skunk ManIt's just a rod.
SpeakerOh, okay.
Skunk ManI used to have a T-shirt that said, Caca da Vaca.
BubblemanYeah. Cool T. Cool Herc. How about a bong rip? It's been a while. It seems like it's been a while.
Ryan Dank AfYou guys want to rip a bowl?
BubblemanGet iry-iry to the cliny-iney.
SpeakerGot some Wi-Fi. Pulled this a little early just so we were all talking about that. This is pulled a little early. Has anybody ever tried? And dried and cured and then pressed.
Skunk ManHas anybody ever tried pressing mushrooms to see if you can get mushroom rosin?
SpeakerI think Paul Scammons probably knows about it. What about doing it to poppies? You can extract mushrooms, by the way, relatively easily, and get very pure crystals.
BubblemanWell, you might as well just tell everyone how to do it.
SpeakerWell...
SpeakerDo it.
BubblemanAre you being sarcastic? No, no, not at all. Honestly, that's a very good thing to tell people. They can find out as well on different websites.
Skunk ManIs it water soluble, Indra, or is it alcohol soluble?
SpeakerWell, it's an alcohol soluble process. You just soak the mushrooms in ethanol for two or three days, pour the ethanol through a coffee filter, let it dry out. Bang, there it is.
BubblemanI believe the term is oops. There it is.
SpeakerI don't know if it's going to be oops. It works really good that way. Sometimes you might want to filter it through an activated charcoal filter, and that way it will remove the mushroomy smell from the crystals when you get them. Yeah, that works. You can also actually BHO mushrooms.
Skunk ManIn Bali in the 70s, I used to follow the cows. I would take a motorcycle ride down the beach until I saw cows. Then I would get down to their level and follow them around until I found piles of shit. Or actually, an area where they had shit like a week or two earlier. And then you just found zillions of little mushrooms growing. They were Paniolus, so you had to eat zillions of them.
SpeakerPaniolus subaltius?
Skunk ManI'm not sure which one it was. But each one was only about a mic. I mean, they were not strong like Cubennis.
SpeakerYeah, yeah, Panioli Subaltius is a very mellow mushroom trip.
Skunk ManWell, if you eat 200 of them, I guarantee you, you get electricity pouring through you.
SpeakerYeah, you do, but in smaller amounts or like in what you would consider a normal dose, it's a very mellow trip. But yeah, you can eat enough of them. I mean, once upon a time I extracted 50 pounds of mushrooms and got this whole bucket of crystals and mistakenly we all misjudged the potency of it and we spent a couple of days going, fuck.
BubblemanDid you learn about the Terrence McKenna quote where he says, these substances do not bathe the ego in a cloud of certitude?
SpeakerNo, but I was thinking that while I was high, though.
BubblemanOh, no shit. Wow. Some of the best moments of my life, like some incredibly poignant experiences happened while under the influence of psilocybin mushrooms.
SpeakerAbsolutely wonderful stuff, no doubt about it. All the different highs have their own message, no doubt about it, but I looked around and looked around and looked around trying to find Something that was not going to be deleterious to my body and soul the next day. And the only thing I found so far really was, well, two things. Pot, mescaline, and I guess mushrooms come in in a third.
SpeakerI love this gas burning one, I tell you. It cleans this titanium thing beautifully.
SpeakerIt's got its own little built-in carb cap on it.
Skunk ManI just wanted to report that my clean bong got me twice as high. Maybe it was a twice as big a dab I believe.
BubblemanExcuse me, coughing while Sam's trying to talk? How rude.
SpeakerI noticed that the cough factor after I got this piece of glass has been vastly reduced, which is better than half-assed, right? Mm-hmm, truly is.
Skunk ManCopping comes from combusting plants.
BubblemanSo what do you got there, Chimera? Yes, we can.
Skunk ManIt's words of wisdom from Steve Hill. Can you guys hear me?
BubblemanYes, we can.
Skunk ManWe can hear you. You're kind of soft.
SpeakerWe can only hear you, but we can see all the little signs you're putting up, too.
BubblemanI can see myself now. Put them back up.
Skunk ManThere was two of you, Bubble Man. I like it a lot better.
SpeakerThere you go. Blow that one up. Push your mic button. Should we refer to that as Double Bubble? We could refer to that as Double Bubble. Steep Hill Labs. These guys are like really bad news people. You know? I've had to deal with them for years and there's definitely some political crap going on there. These people are trying to use their lab to encourage some businesses and step on the reputation of others.
SpeakerI think they're turning out a bunch of horseshit stuff all the time. Gee whiz. You know, I don't understand what's wrong with people because here we're trying to make pot legal and everything. We got a bunch of turkeys in the middle of it who are so involved with trying to make the fast buck out of it that they're stomping on everybody's heads and hearts and minds while they're doing it.
SpeakerWhat's up with that, Ninja?
BubblemanWell, people, I don't really know anything about That I don't have it. I mean, I've met only Addison who was with them as a founding member. I don't know anything about the lab or what they're doing. I didn't even understand what he put up there because it was only up there for so quick. But I do know that generally what you're talking about with all these turkeys, it seems like a lot of people are excited.
BubblemanTo make money off cannabis, you know, that it's just like the same way people who are excited about like cannabis being legal so they don't get busted anymore. There's like a whole other group of people that are like super stoked to implement and create a business and make money. And I'm not personally opposed to people doing that. I think that's kind of one of the things when you want to get something like cannabis legal and allowed and normalized that it's going to, if it's going to be allowed to be Thank you so much for joining us.
Skunk ManI mean, the real truth of it is, Steve Pill was the first lab, and I'm happy they started their lab, and I wish there was at least a dozen in every state. I don't mean just Steve Pill, I mean everybody. I got that, I got that.
SpeakerThere's going to be a crackdown on labs in the state of California coming very soon.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, this diagram, I don't know if you guys can hear me now, this diagram wasn't actually showing they're having high labs. They're claiming that stuff is probably measured too high.
Skunk ManYeah.
Ryan Dank AfBut I thought it would be a good context to... For people to understand what they're talking about when they buy cannabis that has a certain number on it, right? So you go into the dispensary and it says right off the bat it's got, you know, 30% THC or say even 20% THC. That number's wrong. You don't get flour that has 28%. When you're buying the flour, all the cannabinoids are still in their acid form.
Ryan Dank AfSo if you see something that says 20% THC on the flour, you should actually, you know, Be questioning how true what that, you know, or what they're trying to actually do with that number. Are they just marketing something to you or are they actually giving you the number of what's on the product?
SpeakerMarketing.
Ryan Dank AfSo typically these days you should actually see that number expressed as THCA or THC acid, which is really the amount of THC that's in the flour before it's burned.
Ryan Dank AfAnd so what these guys have started doing now is what most of the labs do is they give you what's called the total THC equivalents. And what that is, it's an estimation of actually the total amount of THC that's in the sample that they calculate off the HPLC. So if you remember, HPLC, the injection port, is actually below the temperature at which decarboxylation happens.
SpeakerOkay, wait, wait, that's GC you're talking, right? Not HPLC, right?
Ryan Dank AfNo, below the temperature, I said.
SpeakerYeah, but you said HPLC. You meant GC, right?
Ryan Dank AfNo, GC is above the decarboxylation temp.
SpeakerOkay, so you're doing it in a GC, which has no thermal treatment as the material is separated.
Ryan Dank AfNo, that's backwards. GC is like 250 degrees Celsius.
SpeakerNo, yeah, that's what I'm saying, but you said by HPLC, there should be no thermal treatment of the material at all, so there should be no reason to decarboxylate any THCA that's in there.
Ryan Dank AfRight, so what I'm saying is it preserves the acidic... It preserves the acidic cannabinoids.
SpeakerRight, so if the HPLC system is standardized and if it has very good reproducibility, you can separate cannabinoid acids from cannabinoids. And so you need to make... One molecule of THC, you need an equivalent of THCA. And so that's the so-called equivalent term, right? Yeah, there's so many THC equivalents in there. Yes, it's a mixture of THC from adventitious decarboxylation, very little bit, but mostly THCA. Go ahead, Ryan, I'm sorry.
Ryan Dank AfRight, so what they do is they take the THCA measurement and they multiply it by this factor, 0.88. Thank you for joining us.
Ryan Dank AfWell, I just want people to be clear. I know you understand that .88 thing, but I just want people to understand that in general because it may not be clear to people that aren't chemists.
Skunk ManThat would be if there was a perfect conversion during decarboxylization. Yeah, let's ignore the .75 for now.
Ryan Dank AfSo that .88 number is multiplied by the amount of THC acid, and what that is is the equivalent of... Because THC acid is measured by weight in this case, right? So we have to take away the CO2 molecules and figure out what the weight of the remaining THC would be.
Skunk ManIf it was a perfect conversion, it would be 0.88.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, if you had 100% decarboxylation, okay? So you get this number.
SpeakerIt's misleading.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, it's misleading. That's what I'm trying to say. I'm trying to bring this up so people understand what they're really seeing. So when you see a number that's expressed as THC, it's probably the total THC equivalence. Okay, so that total amount of THC is the amount of THC that's remaining when all of the THC acid in the sample decarboxylates, okay? But that's actually quite rare, and there's a group in Switzerland did some work on this previously, and I'll show you this graph here.
Ryan Dank AfWhere is it?
Ryan Dank AfThis group, they took THC acid and they put it into a GC, or actually it might even have been an HPLC, but they did it at various temperatures and you can see at 120 degrees when the THC acid goes in, some of it comes out, you know, it decarboxylates, so this is the low end of decarboxylation. But as you crank the temperature up to 140 degrees Celsius, you get more of the, that standardized amount is converted from THC acid in this right peak into THC in the left peak.
Ryan Dank AfAnd then as you bring the temperature up to 160 degrees, we've now got full decarboxylation. The peak that represented the THC acid here is gone. And we have a new peak for THC, but you actually see there's two little extra peaks on the left. And these are breakdown products of THC acid or THC that are being thermally degraded.
SpeakerNo, they're breakdown products. They're aromatization on the way to making cannabinol. From taking THC, which is now being heated up, and starting to convert it to cannabinol. And the dihydrocannabinol is the intermediate product that has two double bonds in the north ring of the THC structure. So THC should have a single double bond in the methylcyclohexene ring, the north end of the piece of the chicken wire when you're looking at it.
SpeakerThe dihydro one has two, and cannabinol has the benzene ring, which has got three of those double bonds. So yeah, they're oxidizing it. In this experiment, in this particular experiment, it's being oxidized, which makes total thermodynamic sense, and it shows you that you can't keep chemistry from happening, especially in the GC.
Skunk ManIt also shows there is no magic number .88 when there's other variables involved.
SpeakerWell, wait a second. Wait, wait, wait. If you take that same material, if you take like a crystalline, THC-A that's been crystallized and you drop it on the nail at the right temperature. I think at that rapid heating, you're going to get a lot of just the decarboxylation, volatilization before you're going to get the oxidation reaction, which takes a little longer because you have to have oxygen is needed in that reaction because the oxygen is reduced down to water because that's basically accepting the hydrogens from the ring Thank you for joining us today.
SpeakerAny air from being in there, if it was totally under nitrogen atmosphere, theoretically, you wouldn't see those oxidation products.
Skunk ManAnd if they're doing it at the exact right temperature and not too high or too low.
SpeakerRight. I've conducted some experimental stuff that's not published that shows complete conversion of THC to THC, I'm sorry, THC acid, a mixture of THC acid, I'm sorry, let me restate this. A mixture of mostly THC acid with a little bit of THC, completely to THC, under an atmosphere of nitrogen at about 120 degrees. So, I mean, it can be done. You have to be able to limit the air that gets in there.
Skunk ManAnd when you smoke it in a joint bud that's mostly THC-A, what do you think the odds are of them getting it correct?
Ryan Dank AfYeah, well, this is where it… Well, I mean, I… Okay, go ahead. Well, you know, and it's really the new going on on the chemistry, but I think to bring it back to the market, you know, we got to come back to here. And so when you see 30% THC, that's just a ridiculous number. You know, you're not, we do find plants that are up to 30 and above, slightly above percent THC acid.
Ryan Dank AfBut when you do that .88 multiplication to bring it down to an estimate of the amount of THC potential that is there if decarboxylated, it's actually below 30%. You know, you're in the 27% range now.
SpeakerWell, that's probably why they call it Staple Lab.
Ryan Dank AfSo, what they've now done is they've introduced this .75 into the equation, which they're claiming... Here, it says, experimental evidence cited in peer-reviewed literature that they don't cite shows that at most, about 75% of the THC molecules end up as delta-9 THC.
SpeakerSo... That's bogus.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, that is, I mean, that is... Well, let's see... That's just a bogus statement.
SpeakerYeah. That's so misleading. It's so misleading, it's not even funny.
Ryan Dank AfBut so that they've then built this .75 number into this equation... That they're trying to tell you is a better way of expressing the THC by weight. Right, but again, remembering that when you hold the bud in your hand and you look at the bud and you roll it, there's very little THC in the flower. It's actually almost all THC acid.
Ryan Dank AfSo it's, you know, I think just people, the take home message is that people should try to, you know, understand what these terms are and why. You know, and when you see things like 30% THC, definitely question, you know, at least in flour, you know, you should be questioning, is that a real number? Is that a lab number that was just given so that they could sell bud?
Ryan Dank AfYou know, what's the point of that test? Is it out of the problem?
SpeakerWell, hey, Ryan, what was unclear to me, because I looked at this very little bit over the weekend. I was, again, not on planet Earth the last couple of days.
SpeakerI didn't know if they were putting this into the reports that they're providing to their clients, or are they just reporting the HPLC data, or are they putting this factor into the data? Because I wouldn't pay for testing if they're manipulating the data and say, well, just multiply everything by .75 and it's all good. That just doesn't seem right. It just doesn't seem right.
Ryan Dank AfI hope they're not putting this into their lab report because it's nonsense. I think this was just kind of a... A little bit of a publicity tweet. This is their Twitter feed for anyone that doesn't understand. That's where this piece of information is coming. But I saw it posted on Facebook. Someone posted it in Ash Church.
SpeakerI think they have that little thing like that posted down by all the buds in the various different dispensaries I've been in that I've seen.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, maybe they do or they don't. But again, it comes down to when you're talking about the THC, that's not what's in the flour. That might be what's in the smoke. But, you know, then we get this, we get into the conversation about how you don't have a complete decarboxylation because it's not under ideal conditions. You know, it's certainly not being done under liquid nitrogen or nitrogen atmosphere.
Ryan Dank AfSo, you know, they're trying to give you an estimate of what you're getting and your smoking dynamics, like how hot your nail is, the type of surface on your nail, how deep you inhale.
SpeakerYou know, how much you load into your... Ryan, could it be that they think that the public is too dumb, and they want to like dumb this down, and they feel like... All they want to know is how strong it is, and they just want a number. And THC, if you put THCA in there, half the public may not understand that, right? So it is somewhat of a marketing thing, don't you think?
Ryan Dank AfWell, it is a marketing thing.
SpeakerA manipulation.
Ryan Dank AfBut I think it's also a bit of a, maybe it's like a... You know, the pendulum swinging back the other way. Right now, what happened is we didn't have testing for a long time, and then all of a sudden we had testing. And then when we had testing, it became a race to see who had the highest THC number. It was like, even in Washington State, I hear they call it THC scores.
Ryan Dank AfRight? Which is a little stupid. It's not a score. It's a measurement.
SpeakerWell, the problem is somebody at Steep Hill Labs is now... Part of the marketing.
Ryan Dank AfThat's true, but it's also not just hotel. This is a market-wide problem, right, where people are using THC as a way to advertise. I know I've said it here before, but you don't go into a fine wine store looking for a really nice bottle of wine and ask which one has the highest alcohol content, right? That's not...
SpeakerBut it's written on the label.
Ryan Dank AfIt is written on the label, but it's also, when it's written on the label, that is the actual percentage of alcohol that's in the bottle. Okay, and that's not the condition that we have in the cannabis industry where, like, I mean, it's almost guaranteed that you'd go and take any labeled product in most markets and you take it to a lab, the number that's going to come out of the lab is not going to match what's on the label.
SpeakerTry to remember that the cannabis industry is selling dreams, and whenever you're selling dreams, a lot of things get in the way of the truth. Hollyweed. Different dreams. Yeah, well, let's draw on the panelist that knows the most about this. Tony, you've participated in a regulated market now for some time. Your products have labels on them, right? I mean, to me, it seems like this number here is just completely marketing bullshit.
SpeakerWhat Colorado regs would want is the HPLC numbers on all the individual cannabinoids, no?
SpeakerYeah, I don't agree with the conversion situation. I never really liked seeing that. It made no sense to me, and especially when you have, like, You know, a rosin or a full mountain, they're like, well, actually, it's, you know, reduced from like 70 or 75% down to this is what it actually is. And you're like, huh. And I mean, I think that's good that you guys kind of went through the science of that because I never really, I never understood that.
SpeakerI was like, just give me my THCA number. And, you know, for everything that we do, It's like you got to test the flower first, then you got to test the extract or the infused batch, and then the individual. And Tony, all those numbers that are recorded into the MED, at least in Colorado, go right to the state. I mean, there's no... There's no filter between basically the numbers coming out of the HPLC test and the inventory that gets tracked through the MED system that says that this flower tested for these cannabinoids.
SpeakerIt's there. It's in the system. So to me, this 30% number is just spinning bullshit because what comes out of the HPLC is not some manipulated number unless they have an algorithm that's changing the data that the machines are reading. That's easy enough to do. When you've got a machine, you can calibrate it any goddamn way you please. Yeah, but what I think, I think this thing was supposed to demonstrate what, how potent your flowers are after you smoke it, like, as you're smoking it, which, I mean, I understand what they're trying to accomplish with it, and it's a bit of marketing, but it's, I mean, I think the public's fine with seeing something that says THC with a little A.
SpeakerYes, so my question, Tony, is what goes on the label of the product? What goes on the label of the product? What does the customer actually see? Do they see this big 30% or do they see a breakdown of all the cannabinoids that was done under the state regulated testing program?
Skunk ManMaybe they should have the acid and neutral forms.
SpeakerThey do. In Colorado, I don't have any packaging with me, but yeah, they do. THCA, THC, CBD, CBG, yeah, they're all listed in individual. Yeah, they should be. To me, it makes the 30% thing just look like a stupid marketing. But it does work. That throws off your extract number. So a lot of the times if you're using, if they do have steep hill, Then what will happen is if let's say your stuff tested 80% THCA, then you might see a number of like 72 THC.
SpeakerAnd so that's what you'd see on the shelf.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, well that's crazy because it is misleading. It should either be, it should be what's in the product. I mean it shouldn't be what it is after you use it because you could use it differently and that would give you a different result. So really what they should give you is the acidic form as measured by a HPLC, right? Which would be you get your full neutral acidic forms on the label.
SpeakerI got a package from Colorado that I just picked up not too long ago, okay? This is from Quest. I think this is Kind Bill. This stream was Clementine. It was a live resident run, and it has potency data. THCA, 70.2% slash 702 milligrams. THC, 6.75% slash 68 milligrams. CBDA, ND, which means non-determined. CBD, non-determined. So a bunch of non-determineds, and then we get the CBG, and there's 4.96%.
SpeakerTHCVA, okay, so a few other things, no, not determined.
Ryan Dank AfI got another beef to pick with the regs as they're written there. It should never be potency data. That's ridiculous, right? It's like if you called the wine bottle... Drunk data, right? How drunk would you get on the side of the bottle of wine? It's ridiculous. It should be a cannabinoid profile. Because if it's all CBD, what's the potency data, right? It doesn't make any sense. That's a really bad way of reporting it.
SpeakerYeah, they should report, for instance, how much corn goes through your body without really having any effect on it, and you can find it afterwards.
Ryan Dank AfBut again, this is regulators trying to put on a set of rules.
SpeakerNo, that is true. That's like selling a fruit, an apple, and they're like, well, this is what the, like when you see those little health labels on the back, and this is how much vitamin D, A, all that stuff. So that's like basically selling, it's trying to sell you a fruit. Well, after you eat it and it goes through your small and large intestines and it converts down and blah, blah, blah, this is actually what you're getting.
SpeakerYou know, it doesn't, it's not. I don't know.
Skunk ManA related problem is that more than a decade ago before the testing started with the analytical labs in America, Everybody presumed and thought that if you stored cannabis in the dark at cool room temperatures for a couple of years that all of the THC-A broke down to THC. But we tested it in our lab 20 years ago and we found that just wasn't true. After two years of storage, a lot of the terpenes are gone, but very little of the THCA was converted to THC.
SpeakerSwag farm, old Mississippi, yeah, lots of crazy data out of that place, holy shit. That's what prohibition's done, you know, it's limited the amount of labs that can actually do this kind of testing to one lab here in the States. Which is Ole Miss, and that's El Soli and those guys down there. I mean, they've done basically all of the, well, you know, Sam. I don't have to tell you.
SpeakerYou already know this.
Skunk ManOur lab was licensed in 92. So we had it for quite a while until they started doing it. I think Steve Pill was the first private analytical lab.
SpeakerWell, you know, but there's a company now on the internet selling marijuana. Laboratory equipment. And they will take you, they will sell you a $40,000 set up, a mass spec and whatever you would like to have.
Skunk ManIs that ResTech?
SpeakerYeah. And then they will send somebody in and train you in six weeks to run it. And that is just so much bullshit. I mean, you're not going to learn how to run any of the stuff they sell in six weeks. And the people that they hire at these various different analytical labs that are testing for pot only are not the cream of the crop of such operators.
SpeakerLet me tell you. Well, wait a second. Let me add something. So I know ResTech. I know them well. I've known them for years. I can speak actually quite highly on their behalf. They are the ones who provide most of the analytical cannabinoid standards. They're one of two companies that are licensed to do that. I'm not talking about them being bad. I'm not talking bad on them.
SpeakerI'm talking about the fact that they exist. They sell these analytical laboratories to people who don't really know how to run them or run them poorly because the people that... Right. Well, then they hire me as a consultant and I can help them get their shit together. So, yeah. So, Mark's the one we can actually blame.
SpeakerRight on Head Church, we can have a hit-miss thing where people can come on, and if you got enough bad votes, well, we took you out and threw a pie in your face.
Ryan Dank AfThat turned around real quick, didn't it?
BubblemanThrow a pie.
Skunk ManThrow the pie.
BubblemanYeah, and I know someone that'll record it.
SpeakerHa ha ha ha ha. Oh, boy. But anyway, I mean, hey, the instrumentation itself should be run by a degreed chemist. And there's lots of degreed chemists out there. And people reach out to me all the time saying, hey, how do I get a job in the industry? What degree should I get? So go out and get a chemistry degree. And a couple of years from now, there'll be state mandated testing all throughout at least the US.
SpeakerThey'll want a chemist to run that equipment that you just bought from Shimatsu or Restek or whoever you're buying your stuff from. But there are standard methods. You know, the debacker HPLC method, which should be the standardized method that's in the AHP herbal monograph. I mean, if there's an herbal product, the American herbal monograph, Association, what are they called? AHP, right? American Herbal Products, makes a monograph on all the best practices for the raising, rearing, husbandry, and everything you need to know about herbal products.
SpeakerAnd so why wouldn't we just... We apply this to all the other herbal products that are in commerce today. Why wouldn't we apply this to cannabis? So the HP monograph has got the debacker method, which is a very highly reproducible HPLC method that could generate the data that, you know. I thought they actually used the El Sol.
Ryan Dank AfI think you're wrong. I think it's actually an El Soli method. And the problem with that method is that they use AHP guidelines has got the DeBacker method. I actually know that for a fact because I've written applications on it, Ryan.
SpeakerIt's the DeBacker method.
Ryan Dank AfThey use diazepam as their internal standard, so there's an inherent problem. There's an inherent problem in using a restricted chemical as your internal standard, right?
SpeakerYeah, once you use that as an internal standard and set up your calibration curves, you could actually use something else because now you know that your machine has been calibrated. You just need something that is not going to interfere with that baseline. I would use something like 1,2-dibromobenzene or maybe 1,2-dichlorobenzene. Those are going to come out early in the chromatogram and it's very, very reproducible and it's an easy solvent just to add to a drop to the...
Ryan Dank AfSample it, you reject it. The Geezy method uses ibuprofen as the internal standard. I think that one's pretty much the best method I've seen.
SpeakerI don't know why you've got to use a drug substance as an internal standard. You can just use a small solvent. It really doesn't need to be used. It's just something that's not going to interfere with where all the other peaks are, and you can find thousands of compounds that do that.
BubblemanI guess it all really just depends what you want to support.
SpeakerWell, the truth is what we're talking about here. Ah, the truth. Truth in reporting, and that's the problem. When you start reporting numbers like he had up on the screen a little while ago, a lot of people will start wondering what's going on. And the people that count... Are the people that don't know, they will go in a shop, see a number like that and go, hey, give me 10 grams or give me a quarter or an eighth of that.
Ryan Dank AfWell, that's kind of why I brought those, you know, I brought that up is so that we can have a conversation and people can start being able to identify. You know, when you go in and you see a flower that says 30%, ask what that information means, right? It's not that you're never going to see a 30%. You might see an extract that's 30%. Those distillates... They're going to be decarboxylated.
Ryan Dank AfYou're going to be able to buy products that are 30, 40, 50% THC. It's not that you're never going to see it. It's just that you have to be able to read the information and understand what it means. So don't be fooled by large numbers by salesmen because that's a lot of what this is.
SpeakerIf your distillate is 30% THC, it's not very good distillate.
Ryan Dank AfI didn't mean distillate being that percentage. I just meant that you're going to find products on the market that are 30, 40, 50, 60, 70%.
BubblemanI was thinking the same thing, Mark. I was like, damn, that distillate I had was like 90, 98%.
BubblemanI was looking at my glass syringe, actually.
Skunk ManI was like, oh, that shit was like... Also, isn't it hard to get crystal THC-A of high purity? Doesn't it just turn liquidy? I mean, THC, excuse me.
SpeakerTHC is not a solid.
Skunk ManThat's what I'm saying.
SpeakerYeah, it's an oil, waxy oil.
Ryan Dank AfYeah, but all I'm saying is on the marketplace, you are going to have stuff. That's like live resin that is a hot or even rosin that has a lot of the cannabinoids still in the acid form, right? But you will also get pens and things like that that are decarboxylated THC with terpenes or whatever mixed in. Like we are going to see the range from everywhere from zero all the way up to, you know, high.
SpeakerThis is THCA and it's crystalline.
SpeakerAnd it's... Let's see, it says here this is Lemon Diesel, THCA, 93.10%, THC 0, CBD 0.
SpeakerAnd I don't, I love hitting it occasionally. I mix it with a little oil, but then you go nonverbal for about 10 minutes because like Mark said earlier, the place where your brain used to be just got a blank space for a little while. So definitely not a good thing to start off having conversations with it.
BubblemanWell, one day we'll have to start a hash church where everyone just takes a huge blast of that and then just all not say anything for like 10 to 15 minutes.
Skunk ManAlso, as an Indian devotee, I think you know that most things are not worth saying anyway.
SpeakerWell, according to Buddha, nothing's worth saying.
BubblemanAnd according to Grandma, if you have nothing nice to say...
SpeakerDon't say anything at all. You know, here's the deal. Back in the golden age, you could meditate forever and do all kinds of good deeds and you didn't get very many bounty points for it because everybody was good back then. But here now in the Kali Yuga, just thinking... Of good thoughts are thinking meditative thoughts brings you all kinds of brownie points in your current existence. I know Sam is not going to bring in with any of this because he thinks you're dead and when it's over you're dead again and there is nothing.
SpeakerBut for the rest of you in the world who believe otherwise, you might consider that anyway. It's at least a thought.
BubblemanWell, there it is, 6.08, viewers, 2.17. I can smell my breakfast.
AtnMy breakfast, that is correct, at 2.17.
BubblemanWhat is that, sausage? Yeah, yeah, it's sausage and blood steak and feet. I just like feet. I can eat a bunch of feet. All sorts of different feet.
SpeakerIs this something that you can smell cooking in the kitchen, or did you throw up?
BubblemanNo throwing up, no mockery. I'll mute and ban all of you motherfuckers. Just joking.
BubblemanI do want to thank everyone for coming out on a New Year's afternoon for a high noon hash church. I can't believe, I hope everything's okay with Rob and Todd. Hopefully we'll hear back from them later. I'm sure they just got caught up on a great day and ended up maybe going on some travels. Everyone that's here, Chimera, Skunkman, Sam, Indra, Mark Scaldone, and of course Tony Verzura.
BubblemanThank you guys for coming in on your New Year's Day and hanging out and having some conversation. And thank you everyone that has been watching live, 600, 700 of you throughout the last couple of hours. We do appreciate it. We'll see you next week. Geez, I might be in... No, I think I'm back. I think I'm back. So it'll be back in Vancouver. Maybe we'll do a Whistler Hash Church.
BubblemanBut have a great day, everybody. Thanks for watching. We will see you next week. Peace out.
