Live Resin: What It Is and How It’s Made

Live resin is a cannabis extract made from plants frozen right after harvest, so it keeps more of the living plant’s smell and flavor than extracts made from dried flower. It is made with butane or propane, which makes it a lab job, not a home one.

From Bubbleman, who watched butane extraction spread from the start, with guides from Low Temp, The Press Club and Puffco.

Live resin is a cannabis concentrate made by extracting fresh frozen plants with a hydrocarbon solvent, usually butane, propane or a blend, in a closed loop system in a licensed lab. Freezing the plant at harvest keeps the terpenes that drying and curing would lose, so live resin tastes close to the living plant. It is about 60 to 90 percent THC. It is not solventless: that is live rosin.

What is live resin?

Live resin is a solvent extract with one difference from the rest: the plants are frozen at harvest instead of dried. Drying and curing cost a plant some of its most volatile terpenes, and freezing holds on to them, so live resin smells and tastes much closer to the plant in the garden. The same freezing is behind fresh frozen bubble hash and live rosin.

Live resin meaning

The meaning of live resin is in its name. Live, because the plants are frozen fresh at harvest instead of being dried and cured first; resin, because what comes out is the plant’s resin, dissolved out of the frozen material with butane or propane.

How live resin is made

Live resin is made in licensed labs, in closed loop systems. As Low Temp describes it, fresh frozen plant material is extracted with butane, propane or a blend of the two, using sub-zero chillers, and the oil is purged in vacuum ovens to remove what is left of the solvent. Low Temp puts the result at about 60 to 90 percent THC, usually golden to amber.

Why live resin is a lab job

Live resin is a lab job because butane is dangerous in amateur hands. Bubbleman watched butane hash oil spread in the late 1990s and remembers the accidents: butane is heavier than air, so it sinks and pools, and the spark inside an ordinary wall plug is enough to light it. People blew up homes. Today’s licensed makers work in explosion proof rooms built for it, which he counts as essential. Don’t try it at home.

From the archive, Bubbleman on butane extraction in his own words, recorded live on Season 12, Episode 15, The Edibles Episode, with Marigold Sweets and Space Gems. Tap a time to hear that moment.

  1. People didn’t realize your plug in the wall is sparking, and then when you blast 12 cans, well, we also didn’t know that butane is a heavy gas, it’s heavier than oxygen, so it sinks, it does something called pooling. And now the other thing that we didn’t know was how hot it burns when it’s ignited. On the early accidents
  2. I am so grateful that today we have people who have been making it for a long enough time, who understand the safety precautions and the proper SOPs, who work in a class one div one room that’s explosion proof. All of those things to me are super essential for BHO.On doing it right

Live resin textures

Live resin textures vary. Low Temp describes live resin as typically amber, soft and sugary, and lists the forms it can be worked into after extraction: diamonds, sauce, badder, pull and snap, sugar and wax, each named for how it looks and handles.

Live resin vs live rosin

Live resin vs live rosin is solvent against solventless, from the same fresh frozen plants. Live resin dissolves the resin out with butane or propane; live rosin washes the resin heads off in ice water and presses the hash with heat. Low Temp’s 2025 price averages put live resin at about $30 a gram and live rosin at about $40. The full comparison is in live rosin vs live resin.

How to use live resin concentrate

To use live resin concentrate, dab it at a low temperature, so the terpenes it was frozen to keep don’t burn off; Puffco lists it among the dab-ready concentrates its devices are built for, and the method is in how to dab. How it compares with distillate, the refined oil used in vape carts and edibles, is in live resin vs distillate.

Live resin questions

Live resin questions, answered short:

What is live resin?

Live resin is a cannabis concentrate extracted with butane or propane from plants frozen at harvest, so it keeps more of the plant’s terpenes.

Is live resin weed?

Yes, live resin is weed in concentrated form: a cannabis extract made from plants frozen at harvest, about 60 to 90 percent THC by Low Temp’s figures.

Why is it called live resin?

It is called live resin because it is made from plants frozen fresh at harvest, while still live, rather than from dried and cured flower.

Is live resin solventless?

No, live resin isn’t solventless: it is extracted with butane or propane. The solventless version from the same fresh frozen plants is live rosin.

How strong is live resin?

Live resin is strong: about 60 to 90 percent THC, by Low Temp’s figures.

Can you make live resin at home?

No, you can’t safely make live resin at home: butane and propane are explosive, and live resin is made in licensed labs with closed loop systems and explosion proof rooms.

What is the difference between live resin and live rosin?

The difference between live resin and live rosin is the solvent: live resin is extracted with butane or propane, while live rosin is pressed from ice water hash with heat alone.
