Live Resin vs Distillate: Which Is Better?

Live resin vs distillate is flavor against purity. Live resin keeps the plant’s terpenes; distillate strips out nearly everything but THC, and any flavor it has is added back afterward.

From Bubbleman’s own words on Hash Church, with guides from Low Temp and Puffco, a 2024 Johns Hopkins study and the CDC.

Live resin is a full spectrum butane or propane extract of fresh frozen cannabis, about 60 to 90 percent THC, that tastes like the plant. Distillate is a refined oil, upwards of 90 percent THC, distilled until the terpenes are gone; any flavor is added back. Live resin costs more and tastes like the strain; distillate is cheaper, consistent and goes into vape carts and edibles.

What distillate is

Distillate is what’s left when an extract is refined down to its cannabinoids. A crude extract, made with hydrocarbons, ethanol or CO2, is winterized, filtered and decarboxylated, then distilled by short path, wiped film or fractional distillation. Puffco says the process removes the waxes, pigments, terpenes and minor cannabinoids. What remains is a thick, clear oil of upwards of 90 percent THC, used in vape carts, edibles and other made products.

What live resin is

Live resin is the opposite approach: keep everything the plant had. Fresh frozen plants are extracted with butane or propane, and the oil keeps the terpenes that drying would have cost, so it smells and tastes like the strain. More in live resin.

Live resin vs distillate taste

Live resin vs distillate taste isn’t close: live resin tastes like the plant it came from, and distillate on its own tastes of very little. Flavored distillate gets its taste from terpenes added after distilling, which Low Temp notes may be collected from the original plants or bought in, synthetic or from other sources. Puffco points out that an added profile is not the same as the original mix.

Live resin vs distillate effects

Live resin vs distillate effects both come mainly from THC, and distillate has more of it. Whether the terpenes in live resin change the high is still being studied. One human study points that way: in a 2024 Johns Hopkins trial, adding vaporized limonene, a citrus terpene, to a 30 milligram dose of THC lowered people’s ratings of feeling anxious and paranoid. More in terpenes.

Why distillate is cheaper

Distillate is cheaper because it can be made from lower value material: dried trim and lesser flower go in, and distilling strips out the flavor anyway. Live resin needs fresh frozen plants good enough to be worth tasting. Low Temp puts the average live resin price at about $30 a gram in 2025.

Choosing a live resin vs distillate cart

Choosing a live resin vs distillate cart comes down to the same trade: a live resin cart carries the plant’s own terpenes, a distillate cart whatever terpenes were added. Whichever you buy, buy it from a licensed store. The CDC strongly linked the 2019 and 2020 outbreak of vaping lung injuries in the United States to vitamin E acetate, an additive in some THC vape products, and warned against THC vapes from informal sources such as dealers.

Live resin vs rosin vs distillate

Live resin vs rosin vs distillate adds a third, solventless option. Live rosin comes from the same fresh frozen plants as live resin but is washed in ice water and pressed with heat, with no solvent at all; Low Temp puts it at about $40 a gram. The comparison is in live rosin vs live resin.

Which is better, live resin or distillate?

Which is better, live resin or distillate, depends on what you want from it. For flavor and the full character of the plant, live resin. For a cheap, consistent, nearly flavorless dose of THC in a cart or an edible, distillate does the job. Bubbleman’s view, in his own words below, is that the cannabinoids are only the base.

  1. I guess nowadays it’s more sketchy because people make pre-roll joints with floor sweepings, distillate, and botanical terps… Roll your buds if you’re gonna give those joints away, people. This is advice from your Uncle Bubbleman. On distillate pre-rolls
  2. The cannabinoids are sort of this base, but… if everyone just wanted those, they could get distillate for like a dollar twenty a gram. So… what it really is, is it’s cannabinoids mixed with these really high-level volatile organic compound profiles… that really is to me the future of cannabis extracts. On what distillate leaves out

Live resin and distillate questions

Live resin and distillate questions, answered short:

Is live resin better than distillate?

Live resin is better than distillate for flavor, because it keeps the plant’s terpenes; distillate is higher in THC, cheaper and more consistent.

Is distillate stronger than live resin?

Distillate is stronger than live resin by THC percentage, upwards of 90 percent against about 60 to 90, but it has none of the plant’s own terpenes.

Does distillate have terpenes?

Distillate has no terpenes of its own: distilling removes them, and any flavor comes from terpenes added back afterward.

Why is live resin more expensive than distillate?

Live resin is more expensive than distillate because it needs fresh frozen plants worth tasting, while distillate can be made from dried trim.

Are live resin carts better than distillate carts?

Live resin carts are better than distillate carts for flavor, since they carry the plant’s own terpenes; whichever you choose, buy from a licensed store.
