Hash Hole: What It Is and How to Roll One

A hash hole is a joint rolled around a core of hash rosin, or bubble hash, running down the middle. As it burns, the heat pulls toward the core and hollows out the center of the ash, which is where the name comes from.

From Hash Church’s pre-roll episode and Bubbleman’s own way of rolling one.

A hash hole is a joint with a rope of hash rosin or bubble hash running through its center. To roll one, roll the concentrate into a thin rope, lay it down the middle of half the flower, cover it with the rest so it stays centered, and roll it firmly. It burns slowly and hits far harder than a plain joint.

What is a hash hole?

A hash hole is a joint with a core of concentrate, usually hash rosin, rolled into the middle of the flower. Most are big joints, a gram or two of flower around a rope of rosin.

Hash hole meaning: where the name comes from

The meaning of hash hole is right there in the burn. As the joint burns, the heat pulls toward the core and hollows out the center, so the burning end shows a dark hole inside a ring of ash: the donut burn that gave hash holes their name.

How to roll a hash hole

How to roll a hash hole, step by step:

  1. Choose the core.

Hash rosin is the usual choice because it rolls easily and burns evenly. Bubble hash works too, and Bubbleman likes the lower grades that won’t melt on a dab.

  2. Roll the rope.

Warm the concentrate between your palms and roll it into a thin, even rope, a little shorter than the joint. If it gets too soft, chill it for a minute.

  3. Grind the flower medium.

A medium grind packs evenly around the core; powder chokes the airflow.

  4. Lay half the flower, then the rope.

Fill the paper about halfway, press a channel down the middle with your finger and lay the rope in it.

  5. Cover it and roll.

Cover the rope with the rest of the flower so it sits in the center, then roll firmly and evenly. A core that drifts to one side burns down that side.

  6. Light it evenly and go slow.

Toast the end all the way around before the first pull, then smoke it slowly and pass it on.

How strong is a hash hole joint?

A hash hole joint is much stronger than a plain joint of the same size, because the core is concentrate: a gram of rosin carries several times the THC of a gram of flower. Treat one as a joint to share, not a personal one, and take it slow.

Hash holes and hash snakes

Hash holes are a new name for an old trick: rolling a snake of hash down the middle of a joint. Bubbleman remembers rolling snakes long before anyone called them hash holes, and on Hash Church’s pre-roll episode the panel got into why they are so hard to make well: the core has to stay centered, the flower has to pack evenly, and the whole thing has to draw and burn slowly.

Rosin or bubble hash for the core?

Rosin or bubble hash both make a hash hole core, and they smoke differently. Rosin is the norm on dispensary shelves because it rolls into a rope easily and burns clean (see hash rosin). Bubble hash makes a more traditional, flavorful core. Bubbleman’s tip is to use the lower grades of bubble that won’t melt on a dab, the ones that might otherwise sit in a jar, and roll them into a thick snake down the middle.

Hash hole questions

Hash hole questions, answered short:

What is a hash hole?

A hash hole is a joint with a core of concentrate, usually hash rosin, rolled down the middle of the flower. The core burns a hole down the center of the ash, which gives it the name.

Why is it called a hash hole?

It’s called a hash hole because the heat pulls toward the concentrate core and burns a hole down the middle of the ash, leaving a donut of ash around it.

What is a hash hole donut?

A hash hole donut is the ring of ash around a hollow center that you see at the burning end of a hash hole; some people call the whole joint a donut.

Can you make a hash hole with bubble hash?

Yes, you can make a hash hole with bubble hash. Bubbleman recommends the lower grades that won’t melt on a dab, rolled into a thick snake down the middle.

Are hash holes hard to roll?

Yes, hash holes are hard to roll well: the core has to stay centered and the flower has to be packed evenly, or it burns down one side. That is a big part of why good ones cost more.
